In that range, my suggestion would be a Nikkor 50mm 1.8(or canon or etc depening on what camera you buy or have). They run about $400 new and less on the used market. Depending on what camera body you end up with or what you intend to shoot the most of, if you can stay with a fixed length prime, you will yeild better results on average

I have one, love it, infact my son used it exclusivley this past weekend.

The 1.8 goes for $135 new on B&H. Are you thinking about the 1.4 Pappy?

yep

but the 1.8 will be just as good for 99% of everything unless you shoot very very low available light and even then the 1 stop wont be that big of an advantage

im actually thinking hard about selling every zoom i have and filling my bags with all prime fixed, the quality is so much better

Hey pap. My sister is in the market for a new camera, (after playing around with mine, haha). I just remembered reading this the other day and I brought it up to her... She is pretty interested. Shes a little sketched out about buying used stuff. But for that price, with everything included, sounds like a really sweet deal. Can you post up some pictures of the camera itself, just so she can get a better idea on what it looks like and the condition. Thanks :)

The 50 1.8's DOF is pretty shallow though, what F/Stop do you usually use in shooting quads? I've only ever used it for portraits.

dof is also relative to shooting distance. its there if you need the light however and thats why we pay for it

Tamron AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Model A09 is a great fast zoom lens at a great price (under $500 if your camera will support it.

It has 2 cons..
1) AF is a little slow in low light, but unless you shooting indoor motocross/freestyle or hockey your fine. In an arena you'd probably want the 70-200 f2.8 Nikkor anyway. ;)
2) You have to flip the switch to move from AF to MF. Been spoiled by the Nikon AF-S. ;)

Outside of that it's a great lens and it's tack sharp on my D300(may have to try a couple copies outfirst, I got lucky on the first copy). I bought it for indoor events like school & church events, but I find it to be one of my favorite lenses, and I use it a ton. It's not a Nikkor.. but it's damn close and at 1/3 the price or less. And as a plus it's FX/35mm compatible. ;)

Just a heads up for anyone looking for camera gear. I am selling my Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6.

The lens is in great shape and has not seen a ton of use since I bought it from pappy.
