well i was riding when my motor suddenly seized. i took her home an drained the oil and there were metal shavings everywhere. took out the spark plug and it was about a hald inch shorter than it's supposed to be. the plug made a hole in the piston. gonna tear it all down tomorow and see what all is wrong. looks like i won't be riding for awhile

did it do any damage to the cases or anything?

08-19-2009, 02:48 PM
cases were in tip top shape. when we took it apart we washed eatch case and each peice in a parts washer. so we got all the metal out of it. should run good now. guess we will find out this weekend. :macho

how is that 14:1 piston? I was told from Mr. Curtis Sparks himself, to use a 14.25:1.. I have an 06 ER, hotcam stg, 2, alot of carb work and green wire cut. Will it rip or what? What can I expect out of that 14.25:1 ?

08-19-2009, 04:14 PM
it is a 14.25.1 i belive not 100% sure as its not mine. and we dont know yet. we are going riding this weekend to break it in and what not. should run great. it has ported head. piston, and a hotcam. and a sparks pipe and esr intake. it ran really good before the crank went when it had a 12.1 in it. but were hard core dudes so we stepped up our game.lol:p

yeah i would definatly drain the coolant and all the other fluids and when i took my motor out i took it out on the clutch cover side and just tilted it side ways and pulled it out!

do you have to take the head and cylinder out or does the whole motor come out. my crank went out too right after i rebuilt my top end on my 05.

08-21-2009, 11:42 AM
take the whole motor our. sit it on a table or working area and go to town. yes the top end has to be removed. including the cyliner

i took it out, tore it apart, and found out my bottom end was fine. my valves somehow hit the piston (even though i just had them adjusted) and the end of the valve ended up in my muffler. so now i need to clean the WHOLE motor of shavings, and replace, sylnder sleeve, piston, head, and valves. sound about right?

i would get a service manual, just to be on the safe side. we burrowed ours from a freind. i would take it all apart and set each piece out in order. we replaced the piston ,crank and the seals. only reason we replaced the piston is to get a 14.1. the top end was fine. the cylinder also looked fine.

get a shop manual and read it if you've never done it before

I got lucky on my last rebuild, when i pulled the crank the left bearing fell apart, lol close call. Its the bearings that go bad right not the crank it self? It seems to be fine now though.

either or. i've seen the crank bearings seize, as well as the connecting rod bearings

I got an 04 with everything stock, i keep hearing about cranks going bad, i got nightmares about it, well i read that the bearing defect was not in all the 04 05 Trx's, how can i be sure if i need to change the bearing or not?, if i have to change it how much it would cost?, can i do it myself?, thanks in advance!:D

Relax, just ride. If it goes hopefully it doesn't do too much damage. If you have the $, tear it apart and rebuild. Otherwise
enjoy. :D

One sign is, you'll start seeing metal shavings in your oil.
