Hello all, IM.....back, with another project of course. I just purchased a 250R motor that needs a stator for a really, really good deal, but I cannot determine what year motor it is because there is no serial # intact. Is there any identifing features of these motors between years. I had an 86 250R and the cases were not black, like these....Does that make a difference? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks, Jason

85 and 88/89 had black cases. the difference in the cases is the gap between the front motor mount. On the 88/89, you can can see more of the front motor mount bolt, ~5", with 85 cases, ~3". If you buy new cases for 86/87, they have the wide gap, but have bearings and seals. 88/89 cases are bare. 85 cases aren't available, nor have been for over 10 years. Everything for 85-89 fits in every year case. So you may have a 88/89 case and 85-87 tranny or 85-87 case and 88/89 tranny. It could be a hybrid of parts also, 85-87 kicker assem, crank gear, counterbalancer, clutch cover(requires 85-87 kicker assem) and so on. Its hard to tell a 250r motor now, unless you know exactly what its history is. I have all 85 and 86 motors w/ 88/89 cranks and some have 89 clutch updates. I have one 88 motor now, I had 2 and I used a smaller spacer, so I could use a 85-87 clutch cover. Its been too many years of messing with them to be able to tell w/o taking them apart.

That makes sense, thanks a ton for your help. Got an extra frame by chance?

yes, I'm not selling them though. I collect parts to keep my 250r's going for many years. Sometimes I wish I didn't sell the 88 motor, as I need a ready to go motor to put in my trike. Every other one doesn't have a cylinder that is good-to-go and/or piston. Sadly the bike I sold the 88 motor(complete ready to go) for, got stolen several months later.

Awwww, but I understand...Seems that it is hard to find 86-88 frames now. Thanks again for your help though, Jason
