Looking for some opinions, I can get a 2001 400ex for $900. All the seller says it needs are rear carrier bearings. I'm going to check it out tomorrow and see if that's all. Anything else I should look for problem spot wise on this bike?

Thanks

i'd check the bushings in the a-arms and the frame mount above the front shocks, thats mainly what i checked when i bought mine a month ago, and check the frame for dents or bad rust

It's basic used-quad checks but...

Check to see if it smokes or, if you can, do a compression test. Check the bushings, bearings tie rod ends, chain, sprockets...basically any wear item. 400ex's are pretty bulletproof, but even the best quad will have things that wear over time. If I see that the owner has replaced the handlebars I double check the steering stem to make sure that nothing was bent from a rollover. Most guys change bars for looks and feel, but it's always good to check.

If the only problem is the carrier bearings, then I'd say $900 is a real good deal.

cant believe no one suggested it. Check the head, top and bottom and side covers with a fine tooth comb. Bring a flashlight for this. Run the bike through all gears and then while its idoling check the head and all motor seals for leaks. If its leaking oil, or smoking blue smoke dont waste the money on it man your buying a headache.

Alright checked it out,

It does not have a title. The quad is in rough shape, and he is firm on the $900 price. Has a broken subframe (broke clean off on the lower left side), plastics (left rear fender) is cracked pretty good. He said to weld it, but who knows how much it was ridden while broken which hell as soon as that subframe has a break like that to me its shot. Air filter was showing that it has not been cleaned recently. Chain was loose, and from what he told me that the chain was too loose and this blew out the rear bearings... which made me cross my eyes. Anyway so the chain is nice and loose and he offered me to take it for a spin with shot rear bearings which nothing is seized but who knows if it has begun to damage the rear swing arm. The shifter is bent, front shocks have some hole / damage to the plastics on them (guessing this is a dirt/dust cover). And the engine may have been producing a funny noise. In the end not worth $900 in my book, and he said that someone offered him $750 for it a week or two ago and he said no way. So I think he will be sitting on this a while.

Damn that's in rough shape. I'm not even gonna bother to go check it out. From the pic it doesn't look that bad. But I'm not messing around with bent/broken frame

Yeah exactly, and the funny thing is, the kid's uncle (who supposedly raced flat tracks with it and then sold it to the kid) said he could still get $1500 for the bike and that he was crazy to sell it for $900. Oh well more $ for the 250r
