I like to use 000 steel wool and some Mothers Aluminum Polish! Makes them shinier than new every time!

The mothers ball is great, especially if you take the valve stem out, it does a great job.

Try mother's aluminum polish before you start scratching the surface with abrasives...may just need to put some elbow grease on it!

Meguires NXT generation aluminum polish is the best I have used hands down.

you all need to try some speedy look it up on the internet i use to have my own business polishing streetbikes frames, wheels, swingarms, ect... and this all i would use and i have tryed them all, but if the wheels are really ruff start with 600 or 800 grit and go up to1000 or 1200 and no further its worthless when you can buff from there and save lots of time and work,
thanks.

What steps did you take to polish them?

to make them shine like chrome you are going to need some sort of buffing device. a HIGH SPEED drill and a pollish ball will work but a buffer is best. then just a good compound and have at it.

well first i used an sos pad to clean the aluminum up real nice and then used some 2000 grit sand paper and after that used the mothers mag/aluminum polish

You're going to need a high speed buff to remove those 2000 grit lines and produce a mirror like shine
