I have a 1985 quadracer with the mods in my signature. I put it up for sale on craigslist and got a offer for a "2000 YZ426f with mods." Ive never owned a dirt bike before, so i don't know much about them. Are these good, reliable bikes?

Dehner47 has a 426 in his hybrid atv and the motor is good. Quad hauls ans doesnt seem too hard to kick but I guess there is a difference when you dont have to balance a bike. Good motor not sure about the over all bike though.

I heard they were good motors, but didnt know if there was a year to stay away from. Would you guys trade this for a 2000 426?

Strong motor's. The bike's run really good, but they're dinosaur's compared to a newer mx bike. Not that it's a bad thing, but they're heavy.

I Welcome you to: thumpertalk.com!!!

My cousin said to stay AWAY from years 1998-2001 (or damn close to that, I think it that, but I could be off a year) He said they had alot of problems dude to the material in the cases and the heads. After 01 (?) they fixed it. I'm sorry, I wish I could be more helpful, but I can't remember exactly what he said!

I forgot all about thumpertalk, thanks.

Also I think the bike was only made from 2000-2003?

How much is it? I'd buy it, but I trail ride, and only trail ride. Also, that title issue conserns me a little, but if you are just a "backyard rider" I would worry about it..... until you go to sell it. If you do go look at it, and your serious, run the VIN before purcahse! TRUST ME! It bit me in the ***! :ermm:

What about the WR400's? When to when where those made? I know he said the WR's and he had a wrecked engine in his shop from a 426 he had to throw out.. it was between those years.. If I see him again, soon, I'll ask for ya! ;)

They were made from 2000-2002 actually. I was selling my quad for 1700 and he offered to trade. I also do not have a title for mine, but I don't think there were titles in 1985. I only trail ride and don't plan to do any MX, just casual riding. Also, how do you get a VIN number ran?

Ive ridden 125's, but nothing more than that. Do you think this is too much bike to start on, or do you think I'll be fine if i take it slow?

If someone offered me a 250 I would, but I didnt plan on getting a bike out of this, he just offered it for trade. I think the bike is worth alot more than my quad is which is why I wanted to do it. If it dont like the whole bike idea, i could sell it for more than I could my quad and make a little profit towards a new quad.

it sounds about even if both ure quad and his bike are in the same shape, the yz426 is a fun bike but they are heavy and dont corner well. first im curious why it had a ''wr'' exhaust beacuse to install a wr pipe to a YZ bike takes so mods to get it to bolt right up to the subframe so im thinking the bike is a wr426 and the owner doesnt know it  also why does it have a wr gas tank ? the motors are tough and there isnt a weak link in them ik of ppl who have out 500hrs them , but a bike that is 9 years oil could possible be a ticking time bomb so its a gamble. and there wanst any ''big valve head'' that im aware of for the yz426 so ask the owner about it and hear what he has to say, goodluck

The owner said that it is a 426 with a WR gas tank on it because its bigger. But just the fact that the seller does not say something about that makes me wonder what else is different/not working right. Any more inputs?

My friend had a yz426. There nice bikes. The only problem was it was such a pain to start bc of the manual decompression. I think you said somwhere that this is auto decompression, so you shouldnt have anything to worry about

As others have said.....theres some history going on w/ that bike hes not stating. Theres several Wr parts on that Yz if it even ever was a Yz. These bikes themselves are VERY reliable, but they are top heavy and don't turn as well as the current crop of mx bikes. For a trail putter I'd own one. They are fun if they're in good shape.
