difference in 86-89 250r motors???

Hi guys,

I may be picking up a 86 250r rolling chassis, but needs a motor. Can I dump any 250r motor I want in there and be good to go? I don't really want to d ick around with the motor mounts of different years.I know anything can be made to fit any frame, but I'm not gonna do that. Can different years 250 mix and match frames??

they are all the same - any of the motors fro 86' to 89 would work.

85-89 atc 250r and fourtrax 250r motors will all fit and work fine ,no mods exactly the same on the exterior ,but on the inside thats a different story, better to get a 87-89 the have the long rod crank which in my opionion is more durable, and there are a lot of minor difference internally I recomend you go to the Macdizzy web site and he lists all differences with part #s that said my 1986 250r has a 1985 atc 250r motor and my spare r motor is a 1986 atc 250r so I am not bashing them. they are all good

I will reluntantly sell you my spare motor it has a rebuilt crank fresh bore new wiseco pro lite piston is , cylinder is ported, new crank bearings new ,clutch,new water pump sealINCLUDES CARB ,RAD VALVE, STATOR SHIFTER AND KICK START I want a $1000 firm including shipping anywhere in us ! all Honda 250r's are liquid cooled right? my best freind keeps trying to tell me that some were liquid and some were just air cooled.

81-84 where air cooled and are very different engines will not work, but 85-89 would be fine !and are water cooled

but from 81-84 they weren't called 250R's, were they? they were something else right? i've only heard of 250r's from 85 to 89.

atc 250r (3wheeler) was made from 81-84 aircooled 85-86 watercooled , fourtrax 250r where made from 86-89 the 86 atc 250r and the 86 250r fourtrax shared the same motor to make along story short any 250r motor from 85-89 will be fine for your bike

81-84 were atc250r's(three wheelers). the fourtrax 250r's (four wheelers) were all liquid cooled and were not made until 1986. The last 2 years of the atc's(three wheelers) 85-86 were liquid cooled and used the same motors as the 86-87 fourtrax 250r's. I think i said that right.........
