I was thinking about driving over to Maine and buying a z400, and save like $1500.
But I think when I come back over the border they will charge me alot for taxes or whatever, am I right?

Please state your opinion.

I bought a sled in Canada a while back, but things may have changed, or it may be different because you are from Canada and buying in the US.

Anyway, I only remember bits and pieces, but I know I didn't have to pay any taxes or duties crossing the border because it was a private sale. I believe if you buy it from a dealer, there is some sort of fee you have to pay.

There is also something with the free trade agreement between the US and canada, and if the vehicle is manufactured in either place it's exempt from certain things also. Obviously Suzuki is Japanese, but they have plants over here so.....

Either way, since I can't remember the details all I will say is it's worth looking into by calling the customs office or something because you might not have to end up paying anything extra at all.

You'll pay RIV a fee of $215 ( or around there) and then pay the taxes on the amount you paid for the quad.

Check out the RIV website ... Registar of Imported Vehicles it'll give you more info.

I live near Amherst, NS. I dont buy from the dealers, they charge too much.

Do I only have to pay the RIV and taxes, if I buy from a dealer? Or do I still have to pay them if I dont register it?

If you buy from a dealership you have to pay RIV taxes if you buy private you have to pay RIV and taxes on whatever you payed for the bike. so buy private and get 2 different bills of sale;)

I agree with Tommy Warren... be prepared to show how much you paid... youll pay taxes on that. If the quad is over 15 years i think it is then you dont have the pay the RIV taxes. I think. I could be wrong. When i brought my 250r over i just had to pay sales tax. Just have a bill of sale for a reasonable amount written up plus the one for the actual purchase. But make the bill of sale reasonable otherwise youll just get hasseled.... and be prepared for them to search your truck. I had one basically search every single inch of my truck... and another time, they just looked at the quad, and the bill of sale and said go ahead... no problems no questions....

If I did buy over the border, would I need to have the papers for the bike? Someone said If i didnt have the papers, they might take the bike and inpound it.

If its used you may have to call the factory and make sure all the recalls have been fixed. it says something about it in the link I post above.

About the ownership papers....I would never try to cross the border with a quad that had no papers thats just asking for trouble.
