haha thanks man i like it :) sounds way better in person its really loud, but the ticking is louder than the exhaust when it gets warmed up. i think my timing chain is stretched :S

How long since a valve adjustment? It almost sounds like valves hitting the piston. Mine had a real loud tap like that when it jumped timing one time. IT jumped one tooth and still ran, it just had a horrible tick.

the last time it was in the shop they were adjusted maybe a month ago if that, if it jumped timing would i notice a decrease in power or would it be running any different?

replied to video def not the cam chain.

At least from the best I can tell on the video. cam chain stretched would make a winding noise.

Did the noise just come on all at once?? Or has it been steadily getting worse??

all at once

You say that you just had the valves adjusted? If you talk to any good mechanic, they will tell you that sometimes when you adjust the valves, it will make your motor tick even louder. So if it started ticking loader after the adjustment, then this could be the issue. 400's are notorious for ticking.

i didnt even look but you should replace the chain and tensioner as a set......info only

Ive never heard a loose chain making a whining sound more of a slapping sound....a loose chain can also skip time and it would shift the power but not necessarily mean power "loss".

when im going down the road about 1/4 throttle in 5th then i pin it it will like rev high then catch and go. its never done that before only when the ticking started

almost sounds like clutch or tranny issue

found out the problem- seems like the ace mechanic at the honda shop didnt tighten the cam sprocket bolts.

right on at least you caught it before it was too late. Does it tick much anymore?

muddzilla94

barely any at all, its got a slight tick but valves were in spec, just the normal 400ex sound lo

right on mine doesnt tick until it gets hot, everything is in spec I have checked and rechecked.anoying though, I guess I will install a spal fan and see if that helps. I dont think it ticks too much I just dont like ticking at all.

me either it gets annoying. my header pipe glows orange too lol which way do you think i should jet, richer or leaner?

mcgrath
08-14-2009, 08:25 PM
Id jet it richer, what do you have in it right now?

its all stock jetting, i was thinking a 42 pilot and a 155 main does that sound good

mcgrath

yeah probably 40 pilot and a 155 main to start with. I have a 416 ,11:1 piston k&n filter and I run a 40 pilot and a 155 main runs excellent. stock with an exhaust will definately run lean. Everything you do to increase air flow leans air fuel ratio more.

alright ill give that a try, thanks man
