hey guys. im wanting to get a new quad to race XC on. i was looking at soem of the rice burners (yfz, ltr, and trx) but then i thought i would like to stay with polaris. whatever i get i want to be able to find parts easily, and be able to race it for a couple of years without wanting something else. so my question is whats the difference between the 08 and 09 outlaws? you can get the 08 and olde routlaws fairly cheap now. is the 09 worth the extra cash? do most of the parts interchange? which would be better in your all's opinions for xc? 525 or 450?
thanks guys!

The biggest difference between the 07-08 and the 09-10 is the body and plastics. The 09-10 have less fasterners, nuts bolts, etc. They are only a couple of pounds lighter. If your goin for cost I'd go with the 07-08 I race an 07 irs and love it for xc.

how do they handle? they look like they sit up pretty high comapred to other ricers. also how reliable are they? i just broke the frame on my 400 tb in one spot and betn and twisted it in another.

I have a 2009 525 IRS and I love it but i have had problems with it. When it is working right which is most of the time, i love how it handles pretty much all terrain, its worst area is in the tight stuff. I have never ridden a 07 or 08 but i went with the 09 because i liked how it looks much better, wanted the lighter weight and wasn't really all that thrilled about the all different sizes of fasteners, all stuff that was said above. Are they worth spending that much more money? I really couldnt tell you.

what problems do you have in the tight stufff?

Well the IRS tends to push a little in the tight stuff compared to a straight axle in my opinion, but of course it has been a while since i rode a straight axle. I was told this before i got it, but it hasnt been a big deal and i would stick with the irs, just my 2 cents.

I would go with the '08. The reason is it has a 3.9 G fuel capacity. One of the top reasons I got an Outlaw after hard times forced me to get rid of my Raptor 660(which was an arm ripper BTW). Probably the most of the weight savings between the '08 & '09. Not to mention an '08 actually LOOKS like an Outlaw.

I have sen a list of about 20 changes between the 08' and the 09'. I can only remember a few, but the guy who wrote swore the 09' is a bunch better. Battery relocated, foot pegs relocated, fuel pump, plastics/headlight, lighter, less fastners...but more consistant in the sizing, smaller fuel tank. This guy had a 07', and now he swears that the 09' handles WAY better.

my friend got to ride a new one and he said it was like riding on a cloud it handled so good.

If you can find an 08 at a good price, go for it. Then rework the suspension and still have less into it than an 09.

But as mentioned above, the changes are more than skin deep in the 09's

Look at the parts on polarisind, at just the suspension changes. but this is mostly on the SRA models. the IRS suspension i dont think is alot different. You will have a hard time finding a new O8 IRS at the same price you can get a left over 08 SRA for. I have not saw any yet, must of sold them all.

If I did not have so much already in mine, I would be jumping for the 09's

thanks for the replies guys. i dont know how i feel about the irs vs straight axle. ive heard the irs gets better traction and its harder to break traction at times.

Ive been thinking about getting an irs Otlaw mainly for 2 reasons. 1 is the KTM motor with the 570 kit you guys wont believe the torque these motors put out whne you start modifying them. I cant wait to try out the 690 custom motor I am having built. 2 is the smooth ride I heard the irs offers in the woods. We ride a lot of mountains down in kentucky and some of the trails are a bit rough on my KTM and wear you out after a while. I had an 800 Renegade before the KTM and it was a very smooth ride on the trails with its IRS. Is the Otlaw similar to the Renegade in that manner? I was disappointed in the heavy push through the corners with the Gade though, must be a charateristic of the IRS models.

What are the future for the Oulaws??? Will the KTM motor be in the future with Polaris and KTM severing ties?
