cooling questions

other than the spal fan and air shrouds what options are out there for cooling our 400ex? i may have a very cheap 440 head and piston, and a very cheap ported intake and exhaust, and kibble white valves and hd valve springs. baught by a guy i know and never installed. all the work was done by a pro race shop in detroit. reciepts and the whole nine yards all for 200$ it can be mine....


but id like to know how to cool it. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Without the ways you already listed are oversize oil tanks or add another cooler.

were do i find a bigger cooler?
wouldnt i need to upgrade the oil pump then? moving it through 2 coolers would be alot of extra stress on the oil pump wouldt it?

I added an extra cooler, just picked up a small tranny cooler from Napa. It works really well, the power dosent drop off anymore when it gets hot.

perfect thats what im gonna do there, add the cooler and put a spal fan on it, that should be plenty to keep a 440 cooled right?

any other suggestions befor i commit to this?

The SPAL fan does wonders for helping keep the EX cool.

get a four stroke tech styled cooler. it cools the oil thats being fed to the top end.

yeah it would be nice but im cheap, cant afford that stuff plus i dont want to tap into the cases like those kits have you do. i see alot of 440s with a spal fan only, and 12.5:1 and 13:1 compression too im only using a 11:1 and im adding another stock cooler too. i thik ill be just fine with that.

The four stroke cooler would be a lot nice but I also had the problem of being short on cash,and didnt want to have to drill and tap the case. I was able to install the extra cooler for 30 or 40 bucks when it was all said and done, and for that price it made a big improvement on cooling and holding power after getting wormed up.

I would try a spal fan and then air scoops and the the FST oil cooler
