Just wanted to say hi and im new to the site. This is my 05 honda 400ex i just got (Love ebay) and im looking to put 5 or 6,000$ into it in total. I also got the basics picked out like handle bars, tires, exhaust, and im going with a edelbrock 450R carb but i dont really have any idea what i should upgrade next so any idea's would help. Im changing the plastics from 05 stock to 08 stock. Thanks

welcome to the site. you have a nice bike there. what I would suggest first would be tires. no point in having power if its not getting to the ground. then work on the suspension. no point in having speed on the strait aways if you lose it all on the corners!

Yea i got that part coverd lol. Im very picky about what tires i use depending on the conditions. I use ITP holeshot gncc's for street riding, Itp Mud lit XL's for off road, and ITP duel rib sand tires for dune riding.

Most of my racing will be at the sand dunes so ill just be taking it easy while im riding on the street. I got a cop that lives like 3 houses down and he said he didnt mind aslong as i didnt get crazy lol. Thanks for the info tho, if i deside to start racing at the track ill check them out.

Shoulda started with a faster quad to begin with, then. I love the EX, but it isn't a rocketship, by any means. Don't get me wrong, in the trails they're tough to beat, but it sounds like you're looking for more...

you have a fine choice in parts ad ons and what not, i would have got all the same for mine if i had the money only with the yellow and black, white and black do look good thow. have you ever rode the yamaha 450? its not nearly as nice as the honda, and reliability is so much more than looks, (i love the look of the yfz) personaly i hate how they ride but you could love it too, each has his own opinion.

for a ripping fast beast there is no better than the banshee, good choice.

like every one else said the 400ex is the best of the best sport trailing quads out there. very modifiable, very agile and lots of low end grunt to climb hills and like.

other than the yfz you know how to pick em i dont think youll need much help in deciding on one or the other parts for this or that, you get what you pay for... i had to learn that the hard way (damn diamond j customs anyhow)
if its cheap compared to something else its probably because there cheaply made. good luck and enjoy, this is also one of my hobbies.

The YFZ's aren't that bad. Not as comfortable in the trails as the 400ex, but handles much better.
But I think he means the new YFZ-R

Your parts choices aren't bad, but you could have purchased a better quad to sink all that money into than a 400ex.

And as far as the whole YFZ thing goes... the YFZ's and the new R's handle better than a 400ex IMO. Even with my suspension compared to the stock one on the Yammies.

hondarace83
08-10-2009, 06:48 PM
Yes i mean the new YFZ. With the motor upgrades aswell as the bolt on items im adding it will run 85 to 90 so i will have no problem keeping up with the banshee lol. The steering is going to be 100% complete after market, houser a-arms, axis shocks, houser stem bearings, houser stem, cnc steering stabilizer, so if i can reach the speed im going for aswell as the steering level i should reach with all the upgrades i should have no problems riding trails or racing.

you dont need wheel spacers, itp tires, or an edelbrock carb. maxxis tires are the way to go, jet your stock carb right on and adjust the valves. and if you dont race you really dont need aftermarket shocks like elka stated above. get a set of stock 450r shocks for the front and have all 3 done by jet suspensions and get a gt thunder rear link. that will be the best thing for your money

oh yea bike looks nice, i remember when mine looked like that =(

Thanks for the info. I already orderd my axis front shocks and im ordering the rear axis shock in a week or two. Right now im looking for a good raceing rear axle and a good swing arm and carrier. I bet a friend of mine that my 400ex would smoke his banshee and another friend of mine bet his 300ex would smoke both of us so if i win i get a extra 3,000$ lol

08-10-2009, 08:48 PM
haha id get a gforce axle. lifetime warrenty and only 200$

you woulda been better off spending a lil more money and gettin a trx 450r to begin with. im sorry to tell you but that 400ex with stock motor and different gearing isnt going to do much with a banshee

and for your rear shock if you was smart you would just take your stocker off and send it out to be revalved. its just as good and dont cost as much. santo derisi does a hell of a good shock rebuilt, so does colby at C&D.

a good carrier to get is a LSR carrier something that is twin row and is greaseable

85 to 90 out of a 400ex? idk bout all that. unless you are geared really steep up top but then you wont have shyt out of the whole

far as a carb. the best carb to put on a 400ex is a keihin fcr 39mm. a eldebrock 450r carb will be complete overkill on a stock 400ex.

far as complete aftermarket steering? houser steering stem bearings? stock honda bearings are just fine. and if your going to spend the money on a-arms id get a quality set. not saying moose is not. id just go with a brand that is more known...I.E. houser, LSR, Burgard, etc

The motor isnt going to be stock for long im just getting a list of everything i need for the bike before i tear everything apart. Saves time on completing the bike if i have everything before i tear it apart. I am going with houser a-arms i just put moose by mistake lol

what do you plan on doing to the motor? and the best carb for the 400ex in my opinion is the FCR 39mm keihin.

and the sad thing is unless you plan on doing alot of work to this bike like a 500 kit or something. your still gonna get waxed by a decently modded 450. and even then a 450 with a good 13:1 and a good cam is gonna be chewing on your *** if not infront of you

if i was you id just do a hybrid. you get the best of both worlds. the looks and handling of a 400ex, and the motor and power of a 450. u do the math!

Thats why people race in classes lol. Im going to run my 400 vs 350 to 400's. Im buying a 06 banshee and a 09 YFZ450R for 450+. My goal for this bike is to change out just about everything except the frame and not only make it look like a brand new bike but have it run with the best of them with a 07 to 08 factory look.

if youre racing in classes youre not going to be able to do much to the motor......hi comp piston, cam and port and polish max. You'd really be hard pressed to spend 6000 on a 400ex and still keep it a 400

This is my first sport atv i also have 4X4's and i also ride dirtbikes. No im not rich i just make about 1,600 a week. I havent been working on 4 wheelers for long but whats fun about taking a 450R which is a fast bike and making it go faster? I would much rether take my 400ex and make it do things people wouldnt think a 400 can do. This is the 400ex forum not the 450 forum right? dont hate on the 400 it can do more than you think ^^
