My brother finaly wants to improve his 300ex so we are starting this thread to see how cheap we can do it. I will try to post pics as we modify it. This is not a total teardown, just suspension, a little motor work for now. He does not want too mess with the reliability of the motor. The quad is ridden mostly in the woods, pits, and dirt roads. Some of the parts are used.

So far he bought the following items

2001 Raptor 660 rear shock (ebay) $53.00
Chrome DG full exhaust system (ebay) $125.00
uni air filter (Goodfellows) $29.95

He is ordering a

Heavy duty clutch kit (Sparks Racing) $89.95
Timing advance key (Sparks Racing) $19.95
Hi rev cdi (Sparks Racing) $79.95
Jet kit (Sparks Racing) $15.95

The parts he is still thinking of getting are

400ex carburetor
450r Front shocks
Shock relocator bracket

if your getting shock relocator and 450r shocks remember you need to get 400ex a arms or wont fit up properly. plus i wouldnt get a dg exhuast i had one and they were good for nothin. i would get a sparks or hmf IMO

He already bought the DG exhaust. I tried to talk him into a sparks or white bros, but the DG was $125.00 plus shipping on ebay. So he will not notice any gains with the DG?

it will be loud but other then that the gains with be pretty minimal. the head pips on the look like trumbones lol they are a MAJOR horse power lose where the heap pipes go straight out for a about five inches while the sparks curve right as it come out of the engine. i talked to a guy from DRT racing today and while he was looking at my suspension he said my dg chrome head has horse power loss but i also have a hmf slip on on the end of it, saying that i am not being bias and saying get a sparks pipe there the best and my slef own one. i have heard great reveiws about them and i dont even have one so thats IMO

I have had a DG on my 300 since 1999. Back then there were not as many options as there are today though. It served me well throughout the years. I picked up a used Curtis Sparks pipe for it a few weeks ago. I figured while I was doing my rebuild I would go ahead and change it out. Exhaust these days are to expensive in my opinion. Back in 1999 I got the whole system for $150.00, you cannot even get a slip-on for that much now.

I know that is why he bought the DG, plus he liked the chrome. I tried to post a couple of pictures today but my computer is to low on memory.

I dont know any different but you guys bash the cobra exhaust. . just wondering why? Im only askin becuase as some of you know i bought my son a 87 250x and it happin to have a cobra exhaust. Here i thought it was a bonus. . .but now kinda dissapointed. The header looks like it has a nice smooth bend(good flowing) and the muffler is a straight threw with no restrictions, and looks well buit, dont get me wrong i have a hmf on the 450 but is it worth buying something of the same for the 250? Its a woods/trail quad with a dune trip about 3 times a year.Dont mean to jack the thread. . .sorry man!!

well the header to the cobra exhaust is good and non restrictive but from what ive been told the muffler part doesnt have any power gains. it is just really loud. i would suggest hmf or sparks. they are the best brands and great performance

The raptor shock made a world of difference, you can now jump the quad, and ride whoops in fith gear. Now the swingarm cracked near the bearing carrier housing.
