Jam has about a month before his next race so I figured I'd do a much needed tear down to check the frame and such for problems. It appears the frame is holding up nicely but I'm still adding a gusset kit just to be safe. I'm getting rid of the stock nerfs and mounting AC racing DRR, Apex, Kasea nerf $145. I couldn't see myself paying over $300 for AC racing Typhoon nerfs. Not completely sure on the color scheme we'll be going with but the frame will either be white or black with black rims. Had a part of the task today of getting the old paint off. Will have to wake up in the morning to finish it. Will be posting pics on occasion through this 3-4 week process. Here are the first few...

Hey man, where you are getting the gussets also has a sand blaster in the shop and knows a guy who does excellent powdercoating. Ask him when you take it over.
When you go over, check out the blue hubs he did on the hybrid 450 sweeeet

Yeah, I saw a set on ebay but they were $239. Nice set of nerfs but I got a better deal on the AC's for $135 plus $15 shipping.

Man, it is very difficult getting the motor in and out. I almost caught hernia (sp) trying to get that thing out the other day. And all the times that I've done it I haven't found an easy way yet. Getting it back in is more difficult :ermm: .

I've taken most of the paint off other than in the crevices and nooks in the frame. If the guy doesn't charge a arm and a leg I may go that route. As of now I'll be doing it myself. Did everything on my 450 as well.

Looks like there are several models of AC's. Which model fits the mounting brackets on the Typhoon? I did some measuring and the stock mounting holes are 1" inside diameter, 10.5" center to center, 16.5" wide and 19" long.

I got the AC mini quad nerfs. They'll fit DRR, DRX, Kasea, etc... Gonna have them welded to the frame just like the DRR's do. Saw a set of AC Propegs on there for $169 but the heel guard will be in the way of the kicker. Only thing stopped me from getting them. That's the only set of Propegs I've ever seen for a mini.

We have the pro pegs w/ heel guards it doesnt bother the kicker.

I had a heck of of time getting ours out so I made the upper bracket removable and now it's quick and easy to get out. The upper engine bracket in the pic that is blue is what I added. I just cut the stock bracket, cut and bent a new piece of metal, drilled a couple holes, bolted up and done. Now I don't have to pull the side cover off to get the engine out.

The bumper is off a BamX Lightning. They had a special edition that came with an aluminum bumper and nerfs. The nerfs didn't hold up but the bumper is good.

The bracket mod really makes pulling the engine easy. The only thing is the mount for the solenoid was on the piece that got cut off, but I just wrapped it up and it was never a problem . Now we don't run electric start so it's not connected anyway.

Sure looks like that would help in getting that motor in and out. It's really frustrating sometimes trying to fight with it lol. Were your AC's a direct bolt on or did you have to do some welding?

190banshee
08-11-2009, 09:47 AM
Rob-
No, they weren't a direct bolt on but the only welding was the pegs that I made out of a set of Pro Armor Fat Peg Maxi-Misers. They are very strong compared to stock or even the AC nerfs that they make for the Typhoon, I wasn't impressed or willing to spend 280 on those. If you want I can take some pics later with all the specs on how it was done. Let me know.

I saw some of the videos of your son, he's looking fast. What kind of racing do you guy's do there at your local track? My son Jared likes the Motocross racing, we tried an off road Worcs race but he want's to stick with moto.

I read you were planning on a gusset kit, make sure you do the swing-arm. I've seen them break at the shock mount. We haven't had one break since gusseting that mount.

He's racing MX also and absolutely loves it. That would be nice for some pics of the nerf welds and the weld to the rear shock mount also. His AC's got here about an hour ago so I may end up taking them to the welder today. If not today it'll be Friday when I take them. Thanx for the info :) .

BTW, just about done with the frame in terms of sanding. After it's gussetted we're gonna go with black on the frame as it won't show as much dirt, grime, and clay as the white does.

Here you go.
This is a stock travel swingarm with gussets for my nephews bike. Jared broke his at the hoop right behing the shock mount. We have not had a problem since doing this.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu10/190banshee/DSCF2123.jpg

This is the swingarm on Jared's bike. I moved the shock mount back to use a 12" shock.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu10/190banshee/DSCF1191.jpg

These are the Pro Armor Fat Peg Maxi-Misers that I modified. I welded a piece of 1/8" flat bar in the bottom. Next I cut a piece of tube in half the long way and welded to the bottom of the flat bar for a tight mount to the tubing on the nerf bars. If you look at the bottom side it would look like stock pegs and mounts the same with 2 bolts. They worked on the stock nerfs and then used them on the AC nerfs in the picture.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu10/190banshee/DSCF2121.jpg

I also added this for the play in the steering. It's a aluminum bicycle seat post clamp. It's for a 1" shaft and it's 2 piece so you can clamp it on without removing anything. This made a big difference in the play. Some people weld them but this is an easy alternative.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu10/190banshee/DSCF2116.jpg

Hope some of this might help. Its all stuff that worked for us.
btw- Rob sorry for hijacking your build thread. Good luck with it.

That's a sweet setup and I see what you did with the nerfs. But the AC's I just got have the tubes on the front and the rear. The welder that I'll be taking it to is a DRR dealer so he'll figure something out. He actually told me to get this setup so he already should have a plan. That swingarm looks nice and sturdy and I see you moved that upper clamp to brace the two sections of the stem. It's definitely something that we'll do. And thanx for posting your modifications. Did you swap around the mounts on your a arms?

As for the shock mount on the a-arms, the dealer I bought the bikes through swapped them on one of the bikes already. For more ground clearance it's either move them or go to 13" shocks. I've tried both and both work fine but they do max out the ball joints.

The steering clamp was one I added. The upper is still in place, not sure what it does. I'd have to look but it might have something to do with the steering lock.

Took the frame to the welder today and he commented on the way the frame was designed. Said it looked strong and is welded very well. The only thing, it's heavy! Almost double what a Blaster frame is from what I could tell when I lifted them both. Looks like the color we're going with will be white instead of the black and there will be some fabrication done to make the nerfs fit. Will post pics when I get it back. Only 3 weeks til the next race.

Got the frame back today and the welder did a hell of a job. Put a few gussets on and removed the old mounts and placed the new ones on for the AC's. He also welded over some of the weld points on the frame where it came from the factory with none.

Yeah, I had to cut an inch off of the nerfs so I could move them closer to the frame. The way they mounted up the pegs sat out too far. The pic below where the tape is on the nerfs is what I cut off.

I like the black rims and think they bring the bike out. Gonna hit them with a couple more coats tomorrow to make them more durable and withstand rubs. Hopefully will be done and firing it up tomorrow. Thanx for the compliment :)

These are the top notch lifetime guarantee stands. Lightweight and hard to find lol. That cooler has been sitting in my garage since the hurricanes in 04. Think I've used it once since then. It was the closest thing to a bikestand that was the size of his bike so it fell victim.

Well she's put back together but not ready to race quite yet. Jam had a bend in his rear right rim and I straightened it out. Now the rim won't hold air. Gonna take it back off to see if I can get it to seal but if not I'll have to order another rim.

Thanx Ken! We ran our first race today in two months. Jam was very rusty and rode the 1st race like it was his first time. With each race he got faster and faster though. I've had to work the last 4 races so I wasn't able to bring him.

Jam loves the outcome and quite a few people came over tonite complimenting it. It didn't perform how it looks though :( . Where we once did 2nd gear starts off the gate and would have a bike length lead we had to do 1st gear starts tonite and was 4th and 5th in each moto off the gate. I overported the head and it hurt the performance TREMENDOUSLY. Bike pulls strong topend but has no bottom and mid power. Gonna put the stock head back on for now and run it like that.

Didn't take any vid because I knew I needed to keep tabs on him racing with me just putting the bike and motor back together. Wouldn't have been much to look at anyway because those lil 2 strokes were too much for him the way the motor is setup. When I put the stock head back on I should have some interesting footage.

Hey Rob bummer about the starts. You should checkout Category 5 Motorsports for porting. We run a Tbolt Works II motor with Cat 5 motorsports porting and I can tell you they know how to port these. Jared's starts are insane with this motor. I think Vince is still offers their porting.
Good luck with the season.

looks good rob, but i am curious to see how the rear plastic holds up after being cut, and not having no support.

Ride1Rob
09-22-2009, 10:52 AM
The brackets for the rear plastics broke off months ago. That's one of the reasons why I cut them was to lessen the weight and now they don't flop around. I don't think they'll have any issues with breaking off.

I took the head that I botched up and put a TB race head on it. I just cleaned it up a bit and that was it. Because of the huge ports on this 30/23.5 race head (Stock 27/23) we still don't have the bottom end grunt. But the mid to top range is insane. I went down to a 14t front sprocket to gain our 2nd gear starts back and she gets up there real fast and has no problem breaking the tires loose rounding corners in 3rd gear in grass, sand, or dirt. Was going to get some vid up of her running and all of a sudden she started spitting and sputtering after one of his starts. Think the CDI has taken a dump on us.
