water pump seal questions

When you install the mechanical seal into the clutch cover per beerock instructions in the tech sticky do you end up pressing the spring and all to get the mechanical seal seated in the cover correctly?
Also is the oil seal smooth side on the inside or outside of the quad? I assume outside but assumptions usually don't work for me. TIA

I haven't read beerock's instructions, but don't press on the spring to install the seal. You want to use a socket big enough to clear the seal and just mate with the outer edge. I happen to have one that fits perfect.

The open side of the seal faces the oil, so engine center.
