Has anyone tried to install reverse on an older motor? If ya bought the new style clutch cover so its milled right what all els would ya have to buy or need to do the swap? I dont wanna spend money on a motor when mine is fine and if it is a straight forward mod would be worth it.

Well I know reverse is only a pin that activates first gear to spin backwords. That is why ya cant go very fast in reverse. I would like to know what exact parts I would need to do this. Would be pretty cool to do without a huge expense.

I know the big dif is the case and the pin sliding pin for first gear but not sure what exactly is needed.

I had the idea of using 05 up cases and tranny and all my 01 parts but I really dont want to tear it all down untill winter get here so I can ride. You can get those parts on Ebay for around $150 and if thats all it takes to get an 01 to have reverse I'm all in:blah:

That would be great if that would work, I have a couple friends with 400's without reverse and this would be a great upgrade for the tight trails we ride. Please keep us informed of what you find out.

I would love to do this to my 01. Did anybody find anything out about this. Even if i had to pay somebody to do this it would be worth it for me becasue of where i ride

Sure it can, I am doing it right now. My bike is an 02' and I bought an 06' motor for $900.

So the only way to do it is to change the motor? Oh well

you dont have to change the whole motor...just the bottom half ;) i've seen 05' and up bottom ends on ebay go for $80 plus shipping...now thats pretty stinking cheap. i thought about doing it myself, but i'm not quite to that point in my life where im too lazy to hop off and spin it around by hand, or if theres enough room, just drop the clutch and pull a 180. heres a thread i started on this topic, not much valueable info in it though...sorry couldnt be more help, but hopefully you get it figured out.
