If you just bought you 400, it is normal for the headers to glow red. They should stop after about 10 - 15 hours of operation. If they are still glowing red, your jetting is way of, you running to lean. Pull your plug, if it is white, you need to rejet or take it to a dealer. The plug should be tan to brown in color.
Hope this helps

my pipe turns blue and purple, i dont think my bros 400ex has ever made the headers red, but then again it wouldnt start last weekend, then we pulled the plug and it was all black, and it might have been too black for just a jetting prob, he bought it new this june, is there something wrong with it or does it need rejetted.

my buddies old warrior had a cobra slip on. well it would always turn the header a glowing red color. kinda erie at night when i was riding with him. it was jetted properly and everything. the local yamaha shop kept it tuned for him for free.

on my 300ex , the headers are blue almost halfway up the header and then they turn a little yellowish. it is jetted properly, must be the chrome or something?? My warrior's headers always glowed. ran like a bear

The glowing red colour I've never seen so I can't say nothing :D but for the blue, to purplish colour, thats because your pipe has become heat treated, usually happens more on the shinier pipes, when temp goes above like 400 degrees.
Try stickin stainless steel oven racks in your oven and turn on the self cleaning...they'll come out that same purplely blue colour...

That color most likley means that you need to change your jet size. I believe your running to lean and need to go up a size. Correct me if im wrong

when you buy new chrome pipes spray the insides with black Hi heat paint. THat will greatly help the blueing effect also will help lower the heat i tad.

well I just installed the 440 kit and my header was glowing bright red,was 155main, 38pilot, Today I bumped up my main to a170, pilot to 42, raised needle one notch,4th from top of needle and 3 turns out on the mixture screw and it runs exc with little or no glow, this tells me that although many people seem to think the glow is normal in my eyes the bikes are running a little lean. just my two cents oh yeh all jets are kehin(not dyno jet) as well as stock needle for reference
