Buchanan, MI - Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Dustin Wimmer appeared to have finally fully recovered from his midseason injury as he catapulted back into the points lead with just two rounds of the 2009 ITP/Moose Racing AMA ATV Motocross Championship left to go. In dramatic fashion, Wimmer stole first overall in the final lap at Pleasure Valley while previous AMA Pro ATVMX Championship Points leader Chad Wienen had a miserable day and ended up handing the points lead back to Wimmer.

Pleasure Valley saw some of the closest racing yet to be seen, and with Wimmer taking the lead almost 30 points ahead, and Weinen's loss at Pleasure Valley, second place has boiled down to three separate riders.Wienen, Honda's Joe Byrd and Doug Gust are embroiled in a fight to take a place behind or against Wimmer. Wienen and Byrd are separated by only two points and Gust 12 points behind Byrd. With Wimmer's injury and fast recovery, and Wienen's virtual worst to best run in the points standings, this championship could still be left to anyone.

A state with an affinity for off-road recreational vehicle use, RedBud owns the bragging rights to the highest attended U.S. motocross race year after year. Just the right soil mix, lots of passing and the biggest jump on the circuit (LaRocco's Leap), the track provides for some exciting motocross racing. It's definitely a top motocross destination in a region that loves its motorsports.

actually Im not positive, But one year when i did all the mx,s,This is chris fristoe,me and byrd looked at it,Byrd held the rope up and greg stuart(skat trak) did make it and was the only one ever to and that was cutting the track.Joe tried and cased the very top of it,but this was like 94 or 95 when stuart was exper. with fox shocks and had all the stuff knowone had.Now the track has changed alot over that area and there is knowway i dont think a quad could stay on the track and still clear it... just my 2 cents

Gibson started 2nd moto parade lap, turned off track, went back to gate.

Heard he blew head gasket.

He also got punted at the start and almost lost it.

Miller did 2nd moto parade lap, then came off at mechanics area.
Heard his frame was broken so he just limped it around second moto. Too bad because he had good 1st moto.

No-one even though about it attemping the leap.

I hate Gust...he makes all other 40+ guys look like crap.
( just kidding - he is the man ) !!!

motofreak2772
08-03-2009, 12:19 PM
why doesnt redbud adjust the track when quads come? maybe peak up the lip or lower the landing and move the corner back so we can get more speed, yeah it takes away from the jump itself but atleast people will be hitting it and that would make it way more exciting.

randyIL
08-03-2009, 01:07 PM
They do have that awesome Pro ( Pro-am ) jump, however it's somewhat hidden from the spectator section by the trees.

I do agree with you motofreak, the leap is not that exciting in it's present form.

Cindi,

Can you confirm there is a jump that only he has done and if this is the one? The article was actually featuring a Yamaha rider who is known for crazy jumps on his practice track and he mentioned that Doug hit some jump that even he wouldn't attempt. It was definitely a jump on one of the big race series tracks.

thanks,

I have been to birch creek so I do not know what the "Wall" looks like.

I do know this jump is huge and I would not like to come up short or long.

There is a dip after the landing that makes the ground that much further away.

There were a few guys that overshot it early in practice...but they all eventually got it down pat.

Last year Sage Baker went way long on his first attempt.
He survived....but his quad did not.

Denoble over shot it on his first attempt and hit hard. It appeared his quad survived...but I'm sure his bell was rung alittle ( it probably didn't feel too good on the hands either ).

I like this pic.....it looks like Creamer is going to have a rough landing ( he nailed it just fine ).

that sucks about byrd first moto i would have loved to see it come down to the final round with 3 different possible champs. so i guess weinen has to go 1-1 and wimmer has to pretty much not show up to lose right?

and does anyone know who is moving up to pro next year?

I race at Birch Creek and have never heard of any jump called the wall. I've never raced the pro-am/pro section though although I've ridden it on practice days. I can't imagine anything being called "the wall" there. The biggest jump is the finish line triple (which ironically you don't cross to finish the race). It sort of has a dip before the lander but you definitely aren't going to overshoot it.

At the national this year they were talking about "the wall" it's in the back and is the the last jump in the pro section the big like step up with a weird table top landing

Yes....it was just one of those racing things that happen at the start of the race ( pic just before Denoble locked up with bird ).

Although, Byrd had no probems in the 2nd moto and still could not catch Wimmer.

Wimmer is so smooth and never has mechanical issues.

Only 6 points for the win. Either he gets 6 points or Weinen is 6 points out of first in any of the last 2 motos.

Essentially, Wimmer just needs to start and he will win.

Gibson Pro 2010.

It would take me too long to go through them myself.

It was definitely a jump on one of the big race series tracks.

thanks,

Jon

Hi Jon

I asked Doug and he did confirm that there was a jump at Red Bud that nobody did but him. Remember the double double canyon jump they used to have? Well just before that there was a triple and one year they extended that track further up the hill so they had more of a run and Doug tripled it. Spader tried the jump also but didn't make it and tore his akilies tendon. Doug said nobody else did the jump.

Yep, it was Spader. I didn't remember the part of him getting hurt trying it but I have so much stuff jammed into my head from work that stuff has to fall out just to make more room. :D I would have searched through my magazines but my wife made me get rid of them...or put them in the garage and I don't have enough space as it is.

Would love to see Doug come down/over to teach a class at Breezewood Proving Grounds next year.

I think we could set something up for Breezewood. Send me an email this winter and we will see if we can put something together. cindihart@aol.com

If so, probably so his mechanic would have to work on his quad. ;) I say this and could be wrong but I think Denoble's mechanic used to be Joe Byrd's mechanic.

Joe just threw his hands up in the air....indicating not again.....and I really would like to punch this guy but I'm on probation.

He did make Denoble do all the work to seperate them.

It was 92 or 93. There was also a double double or triple single after the finish line tabletop. Doug and I believe the late Randy Howard were the only ones quadding it....Doug had stock 250R shocks on the front and most of his competition was using aftermarket suspension. Not many people remember those days. haha

I was a late bloomer to the sport but I enjoy reading any articles when they are talking about the early days. It is funny to ride the tracks when you are in your 40s. I could be the father of the kids I ride with on the track...then I go to the parking lot and hang out with the parents. :( Somehow, Doug found the fountain of youth. All those old timers were looking in Florida. Apparently it is somewhere in Wisconsin. :D

Yes....when it's in your backyard, you can name it anything you want. You will now go down in the history books as the only quad rider to jump Lorocco's leap at......what name did you give your track???
