Kick Start Problem

My friends kickstart started making noise when riding and wont return to the normal rest position on its own. This happened the other day while we were riding. We took it right home but have not opened the case yet. It is an 05. Does anyone have any ideas what may be the problem? The bike will still kick and run but it is making a metal rubbing sound from behind the case were the kick starter goes in. Is there a return spring that in the case that would cause something like this? And if so Does the kick start side case have to come off to repair it or do we need to tear down the whole engine to fix a kickstart problem?

just pull off clutch, entire side cover.
its probally just spring . its easy no matter wat:)
