I have a 2001 400ex, few minor mods, power lid, jet, guts out of stock exhaust(bought it that way).
It recently started smoking, think its the valves. only smokes when im on the gas hard. with that known.

What would you do to gain some all around power. I mainly ride wood trails / mud. Every so often road race.

I know i need to fix it smoking, but what else. My thoughts are... 416 or 426, hot cam stage 1. What else should i do while engine is apart? Looking to keep total under $800 including shop time.

what do u recommend for under 800?????
Thanks ahead of time.

Bore $60-100
JE 416 10.8:1 Piston $150
CRF Timing Chain $35
Cam Chain Tensioner $65
Gaskets $75
450R Carb $160
Throttle Cable $30
Hot Cam Stage 1 or 2 $150

That puts you at around $750 and is a very nice and very popular setup. You may want to add an aftermarket pipe to that sooner than later also.

if it smokes when you're on the gas, sounds more like rings. valves would be a puff of smoke on startup.

Hot cams stage 1 or 2 stage one gives you bottom end torque but stage 2 gives you mid and some top and with the low gearing on the 400 you don't really need much more bottom end.

Just picked up a 426 kit, cam chain, hotcams stage 2 cam, and top end rebuild kit. Plus some other odds and ends, maier hand guards, moose levers.
THANKS a ton for the ideas and help.
Any other good bang for your buck mods? exhaust is on my next list.

butter fly out of the carb, a good exhaust, you said that you were getting one. maybe a 4 degree key since the 6 is going to be too much i think with the 11:1 compression. steve
