Ok so far opened airbox, e-series slip-on, twin air filter, 14 tooth sprocket, and rejetted. My question is what mod should I do next without boring out the motor?

Not a bad idea, never really touched the suspension

What about cams, what are people using on stock compression?

I'm going to get a hotcams stage 2 cam (drop in cam) and a wiseco high comp. piston 11:1 depends what type of riding you do, I do lots of hill climbing, sand riding ect. so I didn't need suspension just yet

I would say either shocks or a carb.

A cam isn't to bad, and its a little cheaper, but its not as good of a mod as shocks or a carb.

Sure Eldelbrock, But Lectron is better, and FCR is even better yet.

Do you think you might be able to hang close to a piped 'shee with a 39mm carb?

northeast, have you done some of the "cost free mods" such as adjust your throttle cable, grind the wilds in the header and possibly remove your choke? Those will get you scootin quicker!;)

I think with a sparks x-6 exhaust, k&n filter with no lid and the FCR 39 mm carb you could be close to a stock banshee but i seriously doubt a piped one but i havnt put myne to the test yet but im goin next weekend so I will let you know.

Do standard bore highcompression piston and a cam and that will have you running with or beating stock banshees. Cost you about $250-300. I just did this and i can beat my dads stock raptor.

Don't you have to run race gas then? Because I would have to go about 60-70 miles to get race gas and I just can't deal with the hassle of all that to get race gas right now.

I did the "free mods", thanks for the ideas, I checked with a local shop and the high compression piston sounds like the most bang for the buck. Race gas is no trouble two stations by my house carry it.:blah

I also think shocks would be the best mod for ya. If I knew then what I know now, I wouldve put shocks on my EX.

do suspension so can take advantage of all the power or else you can all the power in the world but if you runnin the stock suspension you will nevr get it to the ground

How much are you guys paying for race gas? The gas station near my house just started carrying 100 octain at the pumps and it is 4.10 a gallon. Will that octain work for a 11.1 ratio or do you need more?

100 octane, is that CAM2? Whatever it is, that is fine. i was running VP 108 leaded in mine for a bit. I dont need that much octane. It was 5.50 a gallon.

Not long ago, I found an outfit near here that sells Citgo Race fuel. Its leaded too. Its cheaper, it was 3.50 a gallon. Same octane.

Most of the time, I just run sunoco 94. Runs fine on that. I buy just enough gas for each ride. That way, Im not running stale gas.:D

Good luck and let us know what you decide...and the results!

how do you like the wb all around cam?

Suzuki, its whats for dinner. LOL ....I like that. lol

I like it. The only cams I personally can compare it to is the stock cam and the XR400 cam. Comparing the XR cam to the WB's cam, Im happier with the WB's cam. The WB's cam has more bottom end and top end pull. Even though my mods are relatively mild compared to most of the bikes that belong to our fellow EXRIDERS members, my 400EX pulls like a freight train on bottom end and its very wheelie prone. (if you like showing off) It has more intial bottom end snap than my Polaris.

I raced a stock Z-400 over the summer on pavement. I absolutely smoked him off the start. I jumped out three bike lengths in no time at all. Once we got rolling though, things settled down a bit. We had enough room that when the race was over, I was flat out in fifth..(only for a few seconds) Id say he was about four or five lengths back.
