I'm working on my neighbor's Timberwolf for him. He traded a mower for it and it didn't run. I took off the gas tank and carb and cleaned them out. The carb was very nasty. I had to soak it overnight to get it clean. I also adjusted the valves. It tries to start but then only runs for a few seconds and dies. It will do this repeatedly until it starts to warm up. After that it runs great and idles great. As long as it's warm it starts right up. What could be causing this? It also smokes a little and apopears to have a lot of hours on it. Could it be low compression? Something still in the carb? Like I said once it's warm it will start right up and idle all day long. Thanks.

Sounds like the choke isn't working right.

may also be the rings when its cold they aren't expanded enough to give it compression which may also explain the smoking.
