View Full Version : So tell me...How do you tolerate this heat?!

This summer seems to be harder than in recent years past on all of us tolerating the heat, but Brandon is having the toughest time...

Every time we go ride the trails or desert, Brandon ends up with horrible migraines and vomiting. I dont know how much more water and Gatorade I can shove down him, Ive often thought about just tieing a water bottle around his neck :p
He has got sick the last 3 days in a row :( He overheats much easier than he used to.
Im concerned as we have a WORCS race in a couple weeks and chances are it will be very hot.

Any helpful tips ? Not sure why this year is so significant, we have lived threw hot summers riding for many years...

wow. We arent having any heat. This is the second day that our A/C has been on all year. We barley make it over 90 over here and usually we are at about 93 for an average now. Then again, you are out there on the wrong side of the country....

Make sure he is getting enough sodium

Gatorade has sodium, correct?? Should the kids be taking sodium tablets or something??
Im kinda of lost where to go with this since Ive tried keeping him hydrated

I think before this next race Im going to start him about 5 days early on hydration, the tough part is he is such a spaz all day during the week when hes out playing with his friends to keep on him about it . lol

I personally don't buy into the whole Gatorade and Powerade stuff. It isn't the greatest tasting stuff in the world, but you may want to have him try Pedialyte. I believe Pastrana used to swear by it for hydration during Nationals.

I work outside in all temps and found it much more tolerable if you avoid the A/C during the cooler parts of the day. If you ease into the 100+ temps it seems to be more tolerable. Try to acclimate to the heat by being in it. I think of me working outside kind of like training. I feel like I can handle the heat a little better than some other competitors that spend most of thier day in the A/C.
Also plenty of water and food. I find Gatorade just makes me full and actually upsets my stomach. I do small amounts of PowerAde or the vitamin water with potassium (the purple label). Also I only drink one cup of coffee in the morning and stay completely away from any other caffeine during the day. Tons of water till the pee is clear.... And then more water and GOOD HEALTHY food. And plenty of rest.... I normally take an hour or so nap when I get home, then try to get in bed early.
Take the heat seriously. Heat stroke kills….
Just some stuff I try.. There's probably not a cure all or anything you haven't heard of before......

Sports drink are about the worst thing ever for you. I used to drink a ton of it because I thought it was good for me ( I've had a few bowel resections so I don't absorb a whole lot ) but after talking with specialists and other doctors , I've cut it right out . There's so much bad crap in them it's unreal and it doesn't do a damn thing to hydrate you. They can also cause stones if you drink too much of it.

Your best bet for hydration is WATER.

Also send some heat this way . We've had nothing but a summer of rain so far. :ermm:

Pedialyte. I drink atleast a liter of it + the normal amount of water I'd drink before every ride/race. It's a life saver.

Now the Pedialyte thing I totally forgot about! I will def. have to try that ! How do they taste?
I personally dont like the taste of sport drinks too much.. I have 1 or 2 I can tolerate but thats about it . I thought they were good to replenish sodiums. We dont drink much of them , mainly water.
So they dont do much for sodium then?

MY old man when he was younger used to load hay bails into rail cars. Temps would get up to 130 degrees.
SCREW THAT!:scary: :p

Not sure what would be worse..130 or -temps.
Ive worked at -42 in Alaska one winter and that was NO FUN!

throw a camelpack on him. my little brother gets sick when he overheats to, so when we ride and he gets hot, he goes a little slower and sips on some water.
the going slower part may not help him in the his races. but for my brother and just casual riding its helped him alot.

Grape = Awesome.
Fruit = ehhh, tolerable, but not my choice.
Unflavored= Vomit.

I LOVE the grape, but make sure it's cold or it's pretty hard to drink.

They do have sodium in them , but the rest of the stuff ain't good for you. Like I said , if you drink enough of them , you'll end up with stones. I used to drink 2 a day and stones showed up when I had some tests done. I ask the Dr. if it's uncommon or common , and she said she's seen it happen a lot with younger people who drink the stuff.

Your best bet to replenish your sodium is to add salt to your food.

Oh and -42 ain't bad ... been there , done that , will do it again next winter.

Like Quad18Star said, stay away from the sports drinks. They have way too much sugar. Just keep the water flowing and like mentioned, throw a camelbak on him.

dont forget obvious stuff like good vented gear if you dont have it already ( moose sahara is awesome ). For under my gear, i try to find the oldest worn out tshirt i have b/c after being washed so many times its lite and thin. alot of people wear something under thier pants like biker shorts but i just wear my boxers. a little uncomfortable at first but no biggie now. I also never strap my gloves, i doubt it does much but it cant hurt

You know another thing that might work well to keep cool is to wear a rash guard under the jersey. If you don't know what a rash guard is , it's basically the spandex type shirts that surfers wear . I've got a couple of them , and let me tell you ... even on the hottest days it takes a full day for them to dry off and if there's a bit of a breeze or wind blowing through it , it keeps you cool ( even cold in some instances) .

Just a thought.

ever since i was little ive always loved hot weather. it just never bothers me. BUT, when it is hot i always drink plenty of water. ive been told millions of times thats the best thing.

drinks like gatorade always hurt my stomach when i was little and playing baseball in the summer. its the same now when i ride or race.

i drink a lot of propel. i know it doesn't do anything, but its water with a taste.

Its been a pretty cool summer here on the East Coast. A little humid the past few days, but no big deal.

I used to get the same problems consistantly with the migraines and vomiting. I used to always have problems dealing with the heat. Especially after riding... Sometime you feel cooler when the wind is hitting you, but as soon as you stop and take the helmet off, you relize how hot you really are. Maybe its possible Brandon is pushing himself harder then is body can handle the heat? But I would definitly get off the gatorade, and stick to water or something else close to it. And eat lots of food cause the heat is gonna burn it right off.

I used to always favor the cold over the heat until I was put on toporol for high blood pressure... Stopped my headaches, and I have no problems dealing with the heat whatsoever. but now I can't tolerate the cold at all! I freeze my a** off all the time.

I hope you find a good solution for him!

Pedialyte and water, and plenty of it. Its so hot in southern oklahoma I don't even ride in july-aug. I have high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes I just can't stand it when the heat index is near 110 with no wind.

Brandons always been one of those "sweaty" kind of kids :p
Hes very active so he sweats alot.
So even though he is drinking alot of water, you think it still might not be enough?
I guess to know for sure I should enbarrass him and ask him things like how often he urinates and what color it is . :o
LOL

When I played college ball the condition coach always told us that in in order for you to keep hydrated its has more to do with what you do leading up to the event rather than during. The day and night before your ride is when he should be drinking all the fluids he possibly can. Before we had to play a game or series down south or in the deep heat the night before we had to drink atleast ONE gallon of water, eat a minimum or 2 bananas, and stay as far away from grease as possible. No burgers, fries, chicken nuggets, and any other thing that isnt good for you. Then the day of is when you want the Gatorade or powerade and for snacks eat orange slices or very light meals. Maybe like one orange every couple hours. And I never had any problems and Im like the way it sounds like your son is. I get heat exhaustion extremely easy. Fainting, vomiting, migraines. I was fine with this method. He will have to piss like every hour or so but will be alot better off the next day! Good luck

I'm sure it would embarrass him , but you would be able to tell if he is being dehydrated if there is sediment in the urine.

he hates both,so maybe I should put him on a certain vitamin possibly?
Actually, we all hate bananas and oranges for the most part, but do like Mandarian oranges.. do they have potassium like a navel orange does?

get a decent size water bottle(insulated), fill it as much as you can with ice and then fill the rest with water and anytime you feel thirsty or even when you dont, take a big drink of it, its stays ice cold all day

i did it all this summer in 90-110 degree weather
also, take breaks to eat, gives you energy if your outside all day

if you riding, get a camelbak and have some ice in it too

tried the grape flavor ice cold this week and it really quenched

i also have brandon wear his rock garden flak jacket with no shirt
underneith it really keeps him cool in the high heat.

this is a pic from this weeks practice at atco with the champ.

I drink 1-2 liters around 1-2 hours before I ride/race. Definitely makes a big difference. I always try to drink another bottle of water or two after it to make sure I don't still have the sweet taste in my mouth.

Like many have mentioned, the number one dehydration booster i would say is Pedialyte! Its used by sport professionals from all walks of life for a reason.

Overheating and being exhaused is one thing. For it to be happening for 3 days, sounds like it can be getting dangerous. Having your kid going into a heat stroke at 40+MPH on a quad can be serious ( life ending serious). Get some time out of the heat to replenish their bodies (a day or 2). Don't chance it.

potassium pills, water, watch sodium intake too much can be bad but too little is just as bad.

Gatorade is fine DURING an activity but drinking it for pure taste and hydration is not good for you. Water hydrates the best and gaterade replaces sodium and electrolytes that are lost during an activity....but again too much is bad.

also make sure he is not on an empty stomach....being overheated and during something strenous will burn a ton of callories.

Quickest way to cool down, water on the back of the neck, and both wrists :)

One of the things i've read that def. helps is if you know of an upcoming race or ride. Is to start hydrating earlier in the week, because it takes a lil while for your body to adapt. How you feel on saturday could be from what you ate/ drank on thursday. The key is just to make sure your taking care of yourself earlier in the week to prepare for the weekend. James stewart will start eating race prep food on tuesday for a race on saturday. Camelbacks are also very nice they run around $30 for a standard and go up from there. Look into certain helmets too more of the high end ones offer more venting capability then lower end ones along with being a lot lighter helps keep you a little cooler by fatiguing you less. Hope this helps!

wow some good info in here! I'm not sure whats wrong with me but I stopped riding for around a year and when I finally got back out to the track and trails for a ride I got motion sick. It happened on a couple of rides. I sold my 400 shortly after so I don't ride at the moment, so I cant say if it would have continued or not. Is this something similar? I was dizzy and vomiting. When I used to ride every weekend I could go all day. It happened once on a fairly hot day and another time on an early spring ride, so it was fairly chilly out but I was hot in all the gear and shirts. Anyone experience something similar to this, or is this basically whats happening to Brandon and many others in here?

If you feel motion sickness feeling, I can tell you from my personal experience that you might be having abit of vertigo. The best way to treat vertigo is with motion sickness pills, I use meclazine(sp?)
it really does help alot, just makes you a little tired.
Have you had any troubles with your ears such as ear infections? that can bring on vertigo. I didint get it until I was about 15 yrs old and after seeing a specialist found my type was not fixable. Sometimes there is a way to reverse vertigo,it has something to do with some kind of strange small round calcium beads that go down the tube in our ears the wrong way or something like that. ITs been along time ago so I dont remember the full procedure but it can be corrected, I would go to a ear, nose and throat specialist and have them give you a check up to determine if thats the problem. That is, if its bothersome enough to have to checked into. Allergies and coldsor an ear infection can also be the culprite if you get fluid in your ear it will trigger vertigo.
Just a possiblility.

Thanks QJ! I'll look into the pills and do some more research and see what I come up with. I haven't had any problems with ear infections or anything so I'm not sure why it affected me all of a sudden. It's a real downer and took the enjoyment out of riding... so I'll definitely have to check into that more. Thanks again!
