i dont see why it wouldnt work but you would need the switch to engage the reverse and mount it somewhere on the machine. Otherwise everything should be the same as far i have understood. steve

reverse isn't worth that much work.

yeah i dont have reverse and i manage just fine, yeah im sure it would be a nice feature that would come in handy once and a while but like rooster said, not worth all the time and money you will spend when you can just use some elbow grease

If u really really wanted to do it. I don't see why it wouldn't work. Bottom end with reverse, and your topend.

i think it would be a great idea, i ride with a guy on a ltz400 and in the tight stuff if we need to turn around or something hes long gone by the time i get the ole honda spun around, im kinda small im only 135 lbs and it takes me a second to spin it, reverse would be real nice... if i had a new motor i wouldnt break it all down thow id just use the hole motor..... that seems the logical idea to me! then all you gatta do is mount the reverse nob right by the key switch.

I only ride in the woods and its a pain to try and find someting to ride up and roll down to back up so it would be worth it for me thanks for the help!

Top end is the same. Gear on the clutch basket is a little different and right side cover has an extra hole in it for the reverse lever. Best bet would be to find an entire 05 up bottom end and just use your top end, not try to buy just cases and a tranny.

If you look around though, 05 400ex go pretty cheap a lot of times or you might find an 06 up at a good deal.
