i finally got a job and my montie's tranny/radiator/rear left hub/motor/ps pump/ac has either already quit or is about to and was thinking about getting a 98 cummins due to the fact it can hold up to my needs better than my car could and they last twice as long but my question is which is better to have and yes it will be gettin some up grades in the soon future. 12vs24v?

twelve valves seem to be a little easier to work on but for 98 they are a little more rare to find since they only made the 12vs for half the year. either way they are strong good running trucks.

yup yup both are great, 12v is just more simple (less wiring and such) 24v you will be able to tune with a tuner and such but also will have more electrical stuff but not really much more. i would go with a 24v if it was my choice.

i was leaning towards the 24v anyway... to give it more power can i put in just injectors without a chip? like bosch diamond b 370 injectors? im new to diesel

Just throwin' in my .02 but you should go with an '01 or '02. The biggest reason is they had 4 wheel disc brake and if you're looking to mod it they have much more variety in aftermarket parts for the 24v. Just my .02

both good motors...the big thing to look for is a standard...their auto's are junk

that and you can get the six speed....

..it all depends on who you talk to..some guys lve the 12, and others love the 24....it all depends on what you want...your gonna get an older truck with 12 valve..and you cana only get an nv4500 in those....and trust me...the six speed swap is more than you want to tackle...

..if i was truly in your shoes...and this is what my good friend whtat have cummin's....they have all told me to sae the money and buy a 3rd gen....just for hte newer body..

but as long as you dont buy and auto....your getting a fantatic truck

my dad had about 6 cummins diesel trucks and he loived them all.......about half were 12valve and the other half were 24valve.....but he always said that he liked the 24valves

yup stay clear of the autos....and about the injectors it all depends on the style (single/split/hybrid) and how much fuel you will be pushin as to if you will need custom tunes or not. im not familar with the cummins injectors but this is how it goes with powerstroke injectors so i would thing they would be similar in a couple areas.

we had a 24v truck on my landscape crew this summer and it ran like hell with an ungodly amount of miles on it(odometer broke at 184k about 4 years ago)

it was loaded down with a 12 foot trailer loaded with about 8-10 cubic yards of compost material, the bed loaded down with gravel with 4-5 guys in it, AC wide open, haulin *** almost daily

dont know if this will help but thats my experience with them

I'm sure your budget is what has you saying and older truck, but if it's not look into an 03/04 Common Rail. 90% of the Cummins enthusiasts say the H.O. in the 03/04 is the best cummins ever made. Back it with a manual trans and you're set.

12v are cheaper to buy. You can get to about 350-400hp at the wheels on a 12v with not much money, but from there on it gets expensive (p-pump and such).

24v... which one? Looking at the common rails? Probably not since you're looking at the older trucks. The VP trucks are OK, as all cummins, they're easy to mod and relatively inexpensive compared to the V8 counterparts from chevy and ford.

Just join one of the cummins forums and ask around there.

If you get the 97 through 02 24 valve make sure you put in the low fuel pressure light, I work at a truck shop and have seen a few of those engines burn up the injection pump when the transfure pump gose south. But with these engines if the kept up they will out last the rest of the truck!

Ouch! What year? How many miles?

Aren't the manuals hard to find, though? Most truck buyers want the auto, and I've only seen a very few with a stick. I just saw one recently though that made me drool- a new cummins c/c, lifted, exhaust, with a stick. 99 out of 100 are autos though from what I've seen.

the average person expects convenience when buying a vehicle not to have to search and search and search for the right one.....which is just fine with me that means the sticks will still be there when i'm trying to find one this winter:devil:

If you were to buy a new one around here, a manual would be a special order, good luck finding a used one. Every diesel pick-up you see here is an auto. The one I saw the other day was ordered from the factory that way.

The 5 and 6 speed manuals are easy to find here. I can find '01-'02's all day with a 6 speed for 13k and up. Found a really nice one that's Burgandy fully loaded with everything you can think of. Has a 6" lift on 35's, Aurora compound turbo's, stacked chips, exhaust and quite a bit of other stuff... If I had 18k it would be my DD.

i don't know manual:( but i guess it's time to learn and i've heard tons of bad stuff about autos anyway. i'm looking for a 98.5 cummins quad cab 4X4 under 300,000 miles good body, is 8-9000 about right for one?

really as torquey as these trucks are you shouldnt have a problem learning with the worry of stalling.
