Hi guys! Hope things are going better for you than they are for me..lol. Anyways I picked up a 2004 dvx400 and have been having problems with it stalling. At first I assumed it was me and the clutch having problems but alas it is not, I have noticed that it is dieing when I pull the clutch in to stop, or even if I pull it in and coast it will shut down. It idles fine, rev's up fast and does not backfire at all. I did notice that it seems to take a few seconds to go back down to normal idle after giving it gas. Any who the closest problem I have seen on this site was blown97gt's rich lean problem. So perhaps the pilot is causing it to run too lean? The atv has a stock exhaust and uni filter, that's it I believe. I suppose I should clean the carb but was just wondering if the carb is the likely problem or could there be something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks guys!

take off the carb , take it apart, clean every orifice make sure no dirt is blocking any thing up.
i suspect it some thing in the pilot circuit , you may even have the choke plunger alittle stuck , make sure thats free to move.

if you have never taken the carb apart before some thing good to do it get allen head screws and replace the bowl and side plate screws , there is 7 of them.

Yea, I would check the choke cable for starters. It might be stuck open. Also, what Cataway said, you need to clean that carb.

Thanks guys I will be cleaning the carb for sure since when I got it the filter was extremely dirty and so was the inside of the air box..lots of sand where it came from. As for the choke up is the off position right? I have a clymer manual for it but not an owners manual..Also I recall moving the choke up and down when it was warmed up and I did not notice any difference at all in the way the thing ran...maybe it isn't even hooked up..lol.

That sounds exactly what mine did when I accidentally bumped my choke lever when I was riding.

Is there anyway that the problem could be caused by the fact that some one removed the choke plunger and spring? Could it be in the partially on position without the plunger there?

yep

oh, they are way cheeper than that on ebay .
if it were me i'd get a simple pull that go's right on the carb.

I'd have no problem putting an old school pull type on the carb but where would you get one? Would it have to be customized to fit?

Thanks cataway, looks great the only problem is it would be at least a week before it got here, maybe 2. Since I have ridden the quad about 10 minutes since I bought it 3 weeks ago I am getting a little anxious..lol.

ok I took the advice and bought a simple push pull style choke, I would imagine they are less likely to screw up than the whole cable to switch on handle bar method..lol.

Well my choke is finally here, just have to install it. Not sure if it's going to do anything considering the stock replacement looks to have a skinny plunger that goes into the carb and this just has a blunt end? Whatever I'll try it i guess.

Well that was the problem, put the choke in and the thing works fine now. Well time to move onto the next problem..lol.
Thanks for the help guys.
