Is it normal for a freshly rebuilt engine to smoke for a few minutes (about 10-15) after the first start up?

yeah, but i had put oil in the cylinder to make sure that the piston was lubed right, and also remember that your piston rings have to break in and seal, usually riding it or letting it warm up is what cures it

Mine smoked around 2 minutes, then the darn base gasket leaked needless to say I learned a few lessons but not bad for my first rebuild.
