Danville, VA - Round #3 of the EDT(Extreme Dirt Track Series) headed to southern Virginia for another action packed round of racing! Flat track and TT racing took a hit when the series was split away from the overall quest for the Pro championship. The numbers in the Pro class are growing and the current crop of Pro riders are making things interesting for the fans! It does create an oppertunity however for many amatuers to dive in and have a series devoted to this style of racing on a national stage.

Let's face it, racing costs alot of money and even for a beginner, it's not cheap. Whether it be MX or XC, you're looking at needing a fat bankroll if you want the best of equipment and to keep it at optimal levels....quite a few sponsors to help doesn't hurt either!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 05:34 PM
The same holds true for TT racing, however one aspect that I never considered was that in this form of racing, once a machine is set up even at the basic level, you wont be having to buy a complete new quad every season so the overall cost can be spread out over a few seasons.

Pappy
07-13-2009, 05:38 PM
If your new to this type of racing, there are some basic things you will need, but bare bones are nerfs bars, a kill switch and the usual safety gear to keep you as safe as possible. A few models of ATV's actually could be race ready straight from the showroom floor if you entered the knobby class!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 05:41 PM
Ok, so you have the safety gear and you actually head to a race. Unlike MX or XC, you can be racing faster and better with every lap without having to know how to clear a 70 foot uphill triple or tackle rocks the size of your trailer!

Now I am not saying this type of racing is easy, it's not. But for the average rider, it is probably one of the easiest to get into without spending a ton of money...at first.

Pappy
07-13-2009, 05:45 PM
Want a racing venue that you can break out your 250R or Banshee on and rip into them four strokes? This is where its at! Todays MX and XC tracks favor the four stroke and the riders that race them. The series promoters have tailored it to the bulk of machines being raced, but here there are quite a few classes that you can run things wide open and who doesn't love the sound of a 2 smoke and the smell of racing fuel mixed with some Klotz!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 05:47 PM
If you can hit the gas, shift and brake, then you should be ready to try your hand at this type of racing.

Pappy
07-13-2009, 05:49 PM
There are ofcourse some things you will want to do when racing, and getting off the seat and using it to your advantage will help make those high speed turns a breeze!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 05:52 PM
Now you dont have to have tires made just for this type of racing, but if you're going to make an honest go of it, they are a must have. Again, it's nice to have a choice on something that can get you off the couch and at a race competing that you can build while your learning without destroying your machine:p

Pappy
07-13-2009, 05:57 PM
A Sway-bar is going to be an item you will want if you decide to go ahead and make this racing your thing! It is absolutley amazing how these guys get these atv's around the track as fast as they do! Even the knobby class was flying and many had nothing but the bare essentials!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 06:26 PM
Ok...so why all the preamble to the coverage?

Well, I think it is of utmost importance to try and get more folks to these events. I want to show you that you can go race a National event with the basic equipment you should already have and if you dont like it, well you haven't spent two hours beating your machine senseless in XC , or cased a jump you had no business trying anyway in mx.

And please, don't think this is a cake walk but I would suffice to say it is probably one of the easiest and funnest races you can try. Maybe you stick with it or maybe you decide to try a MX or XC race, point is, get out there and TRY it!!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 06:46 PM
And for those that have never been to a race like this, the start is a bit different then MX or XC. A stop-light goes from yellow to green and green means hammer that puppy!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 06:50 PM
Ok, back to the coverage!

The turn out was kind of low for the series this round, and it was for other series as of late as well. The bad economy has all but the diehards staying home to conserve what funds they do have.

The racing started early with a practice on friday evening and resuming saturday morning for qualifying and heat races

Pappy
07-13-2009, 06:53 PM
The Pro Am Unlimited class was off the chain! The class usually features some of the fastest up and coming riders and is a thrill to watch!

Wyatt Reed #792 would get out of the 1st turn first as this heat race was underway

Pappy
07-13-2009, 06:56 PM
This race would offer split divisions as a region series would pay points as well as the EDT series.

Phillip Smith would put in an excellent ride and take 1st in heat1 for his division

Pappy
07-13-2009, 06:58 PM
Kirby Cooke would run up front, but would suffer from a blown tire and not fare so well in this class. He would redeem himself later in the day.

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:02 PM
Jordan Clemons grabbed the holeshot on Production B in heat 1. Jordan would race to a 3rd place finish in his heat race

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:04 PM
Travis Guess would go a bit high on a berm and flip his LTR over. He was back out and pitching it sideways in no time!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:06 PM
The racing was non stop through the morning and midday hours. Racers were constantly on the gate with the exception of a few breaks to water and fix holes in the track

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:08 PM
Jordan Kaufman used to be found racing a Super Mini in the MX National series. Here he is now running a Z400!

Kaufman would ride to a 2-2 in Schoolboy Senior

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:28 PM
The Pro Lites class has been dominated by Harold Goodman this season, as he has put in almost flawless rides in the first two rounds. Goodman would get he jump in the heat race

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:35 PM
Goodman is oldschool through and through. Tough as nails and a fierce competitor. Out front...the Bee is hard to run down!

And today is his birthday! Happy B-day Harold!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:37 PM
Kendall Webb would run a solid heat race and finish 2nd

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:41 PM
#314 Darin Ogden would battle hard the entire heat and finish 3rd

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:45 PM
The Pro heat race would not be so kind to Goodman. He would get corn-holed in the first turn and have to work hard if he wanted a win

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:48 PM
Goodman would battle hard, but would only be able to finish 3rd. ONLY!!! That man can flat ride a quad!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:50 PM
KTM mounted Chuckie Creech would be the leader as he pressed on! Michael Coburn was giving him a solid race as the pair works a corner

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:51 PM
Coburn would run to a 2nd place finish in heat 1

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:54 PM
Creech would race to the heat 1 win!

The last time I saw Creech, he was on a stretcher headingf or teh ER after a horrifying crash at Tri Cities in 2007. It was great to see him for the first time since then getting a win!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:57 PM
The Amatuers were quickly back in action as the racing continued.

Paula Shank would dominate the Womens class going 1-1

Pappy
07-13-2009, 07:59 PM
Stephanie Rehagen would go 2-3 as she is shown here in her heat race

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:01 PM
Travis Klinghagen would race to a 2nd in his Production A heat race, and would ride to the win in the main

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:04 PM
Kurt Tweedy was having one heck of a battle but would slide to a 6th place finish

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:06 PM
Nicholas Camilli would quickly move to the front and finish 3rd

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:07 PM
Jesse Davis and Justin Frailey battle for position in 4 Stroke A

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:08 PM
Casey Mckibben would claim the class win!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:13 PM
There were some wrecks and slide outs, but no serious injuries were reported to track officials for the weekend!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:16 PM
The racing was really good on all the classes. With high horsepower and the sound of tires grabbingf or traction, I cant think of many better ways for folks to get their adreniline rush!!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:17 PM
Getting slammed on that track hurts!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:19 PM
Getting a good start is as important here as in any form of racing!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:22 PM
This track was explained to me to be technical and tight. I can attest to the tight part, it was flat out spooky in a few spots getting pictures:p

I have shot so much GNCC racing that I am used to having a tree or two to stave off the occasional wrecking quad that is headed my way. :p

The techinical side...wellI geuss I would have to ride it to verify that, but I trust what they tell me:D

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:25 PM
The knobby tire class looked like alot of fun....and maybe one event you might see me run it:eek:

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:26 PM
No matter what series they send me to, I always enjoy watching the kids race the most

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:31 PM
These mini racers are ripping on some highly modified moni quads! They were flyin!

Leevi Seay would be out front in both the heat race and the main in 50 Production Auto

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:32 PM
Trevor Thatcher would follow Seay in 2nd in the heat race and claim 3rd in the main

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:35 PM
Leevi Seay wasn't done, as he would compete in the 70 Production Auto class as well. Seay would finish 2nd in both the heat race and main!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:38 PM
The Birch Creek crews were all eyes when the youth were on the track.

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:49 PM
The Super Mini class is insane, with the most tricked out youth atvs being operated at top speed!

Tyler Skipper would win the heat race and take 2nd in the main

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:51 PM
Daniel Bennett would take 2nd in the heat race and 1st in the main!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:52 PM
Brandon Cooper would take 3rd in the heat race but slip to 4th in the main.

I sure wish they had these rascals when I was their age!!!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:54 PM
One of the best races of the day was the 90 Production CVT class.

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:56 PM
There was no denying the fact that these two meant business!!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:57 PM
Bar to bar!!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 08:58 PM
I know I would have had trouble keeping up with them!!!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:00 PM
In both the heat race and main, they would swap positions several times for the lead!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:02 PM
These machines may look unusual to anyone who hasn;t seen them run, but they work and work well and are smoking fast!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:07 PM
It wasn't all fun and games however as mother nature decided we all needed a break. A nice frontal cloud moved towards us and everyone took shelter. It rained for about 30 minutes, just enough time for me to catch some rest:p

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:10 PM
The track was turned into a mess and it was soon appearant that we had atleast a few hours of waiting until the crews could get it back in racing shape

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:13 PM
The boredom that is associated with a big stop in the action can be welcome or hated. Things started jumping however as a big old water slide was going to be fabbed up on site!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:14 PM
A few runs were needed to get it good and slick

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:16 PM
Everyone wanted to see the trophy girls get soapy and wet:devil:

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:17 PM
It was decided that the hill wasn't steep enough so the slide was moved and the fun was on!

Just staying on it was a challenge!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:18 PM
Zac Willet was at the forefront of the foray...I reckon it was good the EMS crew was standing by:p

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:19 PM
Hey Zac....your shoe fell off:D

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:21 PM
There where two ropes running across the slide...a bit of a challenge and a reminder to duck!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:22 PM
The faces they made were priceless, and the thud they made when they landed sounded painful:blah:

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:24 PM
It was a riot!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:25 PM
The air they could get was more then enough for landing on terrafirma:p

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:27 PM
And staying on course was paramount, those posts hurt!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:28 PM
It was a good break for everyone, sure beat sitting around waiting:p

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:29 PM
We need to have a "Who made the best face" contest:p

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:31 PM
It took $123 to get 3 of the Trophy girls wet and they were wrapped up like a homecoming dance hard on:chinese:

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:33 PM
It was a fun time, I sure enjoyed it:D

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:37 PM
The lighst came on and the track was ready. The first few classes out would hvae it the worst but the crews did a good job getting the track in shape

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:40 PM
The track wasn't so bad, but in between the track was a swamp...right where I had to be:p

It didnt take long before I almost got creamed...by this little guy:p He shot of the track behind me and missed me by inches. I never saw him until he came past me:eek:

At that point I knew my night wasn't going to be great, but it would have been worse if he had just ran me down:D

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:45 PM
I couldn't get close to the track, couldn't set up my lights were I wanted so I was going to have to take a few and hope for the best.

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:46 PM
The action was fast and furious as everyone wanted to run through the mains as quickly as possible, it had been a long day!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:47 PM
They looked even faster in the stadium lights!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:47 PM
If you went off the track, it was messy:blah:

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:51 PM
The Pro main was set and with a thunderous roar they headed for turn1!

It was Goodman with the holeshot!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:52 PM
Goodman was out front and had to ride smooth as the track was still a bit slick. You never would have known by the way these guys were hammer down!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:54 PM
Goodman would run to the Pro win!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:55 PM
Micheal Coburn would finish in second after losing his rear brake a few laps into the main.

Pappy
07-13-2009, 09:56 PM
Kirby Cooke would step in a ride for an injured rider and have a great night! Cooke would take 3rd in the Pro main!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 10:02 PM
Kirby Cooke would have a great night and was pretty stoked with his win. He dedicated the podium to the memory of a fallen youth rider who left this world almost one year to the date of this race. It was a stark reminder that life is fleeting and we should cherrish every moment of it. It was an honor to hear him express his feelings and I know it meant alot for him to have the chance to let the feelings out.

Great race Kirby

Pappy
07-13-2009, 10:03 PM
The Coburn crew had done a good job on this day and looked to be pretty satisfied with second! How he ran as hard as he did with no rear brake is a testement to the skills the guys have!

Pappy
07-13-2009, 10:10 PM
For Goodman, this was another feather in his cap. With his Pro win, he would regain the sole lead in the points battle and in Pro Lites he would continue to keep a perfect record after 3 rounds of competition.

From the podium, Harold explained that he had a great race and thanked everyone who he lapped for being very professional and moving over. On a track this tight, the front runners can catch the tail end pretty quick. The tail end wasn't enough for Harold as he lapped the field all the way to 6th place!

Goodman would pick up some pocket money from Atvriders.com as he secured the holeshot.

Thats about it folks. Had a wonderful time, saw some great racing and enjoyed our time with you all. Harlen will catch up with you at Ashtabula...until then...be safe!

hello, I am Alex, the rider with the number 55 in the 90 class. I am very pleased to see that someone is showing pictures of me racing :D . If you think those pictures of me look cool, you should have seen me do a wheelie after I spun out when kyler "14" tapped me. too bad when I did the wheelie the silencer/muffler hit the ground pretty hard so I snapped the exaust pipe :( . I lost some engine power from doing that. thanks for posting the pics pappy! :)

Thank you for the great racing!!!

You pm me your email and I will send you a picture for you not having the luck!:D

Palot- it's our pleasure. This site and the folks running it are 110% dedicated to making things work for everyone. If its time that we can offer, then we give it. Our only wish is that we had more time to chat and get inside info from all the racers, but as you can tell, me and my rugrat stayed on track 99% of the day and night:p Maybe at the Tennessee round I can take a break and cruise the pits and chat, and I should have more stickers available for anyone who would like some!

awesome coverage of the TT racing. looks like so much fun and would love to do it myself, but in so-cal they will have non of that 4 wheelin flat track stuff. if its two wheels they still do it but not for quads. bummer.

I will do one for the TN round because I will be there. I will see what I can do on Ashtabula, I know Harlen is shooting it so he can get me the watermarked images etc without too much hassle:p

The water slide pics are almost done uploading to the site in my signature. There wont be any watermarks so feel free to grab a few and enjoy. There are more there then what made it to atvriders.com's gallery thanks to a glitch in uploading!

Thanks guys...we do our best for you all!

I heard from Harlen at 2 am (he needed me to yell and rant at him to keep him awake:D ) He was heading home, then straight to the airport on his way to Washington State for 3 days, then to Chicago for Red Bud. Somewhere in there he is going to upload me the pics to do coverage fo the event from Ashtabula.

Sure sounds like Harold and Coburn had one heck of a battle....and my man Frank Batista opened a can of whoop *** on a borrowed quad! Way to go Frank!!!I knew you had it in ya:D

I also heard that many of you thanked the big guy for the coverage in person. We dont have any sponsors to cover this series so everything we do is out of pocket...mainly Harlens so it is good to hear the efforts are being seen!

I reckon my BS in BS will have to pay off as I cover a round I didnt attend, good thing I got an A+ in that class:blah:

Anyone know why Batista was on a Honda instead of his Polaris? Trouble with the Outlaw, or switch camps? Hope he's still racing the 850 in GNCCs.

He switched camps. He racing for Mckibben Motorsports out of Florida. They only race EDT that I know of, so I don't think it would affect his GNCC ride.

He is no longer with Polaris/Rath. He said he hopes to be at the last 2 EDT's. Not sure if he'll be doing any more XC stuff this year.
