I was thinking about stripping down my 400 and re painting it. Does anyone know is it alright to sand blast the engine and re paint it. Also if so do you have to have some sort of special paint because of the heat or what. Don't want to end up making it look like ****

I would only use high temp paint cause the rest will peel and burn. i am not sure about sand blasting but if ou have it sealed off good it should be fine. steve

i have seen black on most of the machines on here. I am sure you may be able to find some silver at napa or something. If it is rated for grills or something like that it i am sure it would work. they get as hot as an engine does so any grill color will work. if you are unsure if it will work or not the guys there should know. steve

Why don't you see if you can find a powder coater in your area. It will be a little more expensive but will hold up alot better plus there are literally hundreds of color choices.

I agree with the above. Paint will come off if you spill gas on it.

But you might want to Molycoat the engine head instead. It comes out black and won't interfere with cooling like powder coating might...

my only thing with getting it powder coated is the money, you know with a rattle can you can always just touch it up in 2 min if you have too. Also i don't know of any place that does powder coating around here

You may want to check into how well powder-coating can radiate heat...

Also, isn't some of the casing made of magnessium???

Just want to make sure it looks super-sharp and continues to look that way for years to come. Nothing worse then someone who does some goofy thing. Remember the guy who painted his seat? Ughhh......

Powdercoating will not hold in any appreciable amount of heat

Pappy, is the block molycoated or powdercoated? I can't really tell.

Just curious :D

Ah I see.

I thought I read in the open forum that it was moly. My mistake.

How has the coating held up on the yfz so far? I know its been atleast a little while since your powder coated it all for him...

This is his 2nd season on that engine. Its as good as the day he assembled it. I had to redo his chassis due to crack but it was fine a well considering.

Glad to hear its holding up. I think I'm sending some stuff to ya this winter to do a similar job on. Sure does look good, and if it lasts its well worth it :D
