Im no duck expert, but I think this may be one of their molting times. Pretty good test as far as color rendition goes.

Countless hours of reading, countless hours of shooting ...its a non stop learning process. With digital its alot faster to learn and alot cheaper to boot (no developing, no film to buy)

Keep at it, put in the time and you'll see improvements

Check them out here for alot better clarity. The hosting site and downsizing of the images hurts them

that is a young drake mallard that is just coming into its color. most mallards will lose their color later in the summer (molt, like you said), then get it back around the first of october. those ducks must be near a farm or somewhere urban? definitely not 100% wild ducks.

now i'm no camera expert, but i will definitely agree with your color rendition statement... the irridescence is tough to depict in pictures.

They are wild, but hang out near a public boat ramp and are fed daily. They will be hunted come fall. By the end of teh season last year, there was only maybe 10 ducks left out of 40 or so:p

Looks to be a mallard and black duck hybrid. The coloring on the body is all wrong, even for a young mallard. Pretty common hybrid, we've shot a bunch in MD. Awesome pics though!

I know when I started building wood duck boxes a few years back I read something saying they could be used by mergansers and buffleheads, so them landing in trees is believable!

yeah, its definitely believable... was just wondering if it was a cormorant, those stupid things are becoming a big problem here in michigan.
