i have a 400ex(decked out) and i wanna move up to a bigger quad. whick one is a better bike for tracks and i ride some trails barly. i was leaning toward the 250r cause i found won that needs a crank and piston. but it doesnt have plastics. it does have ohiln front shocks and a fmf pipe. i have never ridin one tho. i have ridin the 450 and it felt a lot faster

I've always had 4 strokes. Started with a 400EX then a Raptor then a 450R. I just bought a 250R last year. Stock for stock my 450R was a much better quad but after a few upgrades (pipe, carb, a-arms, and shocks) plus some other small stuff my 250R is worlds better than my 450. Handles much better. Power wise is prob the same as my HRC 450R. It's just my opinion. Everybody's different. I would say ride both and see what you like better at least that way you can make an informed decision. As far as I go i've seen the light. Definitly a 250R guy for life.

thanks now i have to get my dad to think that way. he thinks that a 25 year old quad is no way going to be better then a new one. most of my 400ex parts will fit on the r right?

I'm not an expert on what will fit and what will not. There is a cross compatability chart posted on here so maybe you should should check that out.

As far as a 25 year old quad not being as good as a new one it really depends on how it was taken care of. The one i bought was taken care of extremely well. Only riden like 10 times in 22 years. Always maintained and kept in a heated garage. If you take your time and look carefully you should be able to find a nice one. Good luck.

Once the 250R is at the same level of repair as the new model (new bearings, seals, etc) it will be cheaper to maintain. Crack open a service manual for both engines and see which one you would rather deal with. Assume each part costs $5, then count up the parts and do the math. 4 strokes are much more expensive, but easier to ride. If you would rather build up your skill level, and spend less on parts, get the 250R.
