View Full Version : 400ex Timing Chain Assistance

hey im in the process of tearing my motor apart and to change the gasket piston rings everything and i cant figure out how to get the timing chain off and the specs on it i got the top end of the motor pulled off

cam chain tensioner out on the back of the cylinder, 2 bolts i believe

Are you wanting to take it completely off? You need to pull the side cover, the cam chain tensioner on the back of the cylinder, (though I assume you have it off already if you have the "top end" off.) You will need to pull the flywheel to make it easy to get at, then you should be able to drop the chain down into the bottom end and work it off with the flywheel out of the way.

Most replace with a CRF 450 cam chain, as its essentially a heavy duty chain, and 1/3 the price of the OEM 400ex. I used an 02 CRF450 chain, it was about $35. An OEM 400ex chain is about $90, and the aftermarket ones they charge $125 for are just the CRF chain in most cases anyways.

Cool. That is why I used to love this forum so much. I don't see as much info like this as I used to but it is great when it does happen.

Wow, what kind of 400EX do you own? :D The flywheel does not need to be removed, since every 400EX has the timing chain on the clutch side, not the flywheel side of the motor.

my neighbor tore my motor apart yesterday and got the timing chain off thanks for the help i hope he puts it back on right the whole motor is getting cleaned polished and new gaskets i hope this helps me out
