So I have a 2000 400ex, we just replaced all the gaskets in the engine along with the timing chain guides, it ran good for a while but I know have strange noises coming from the engine, but don't notice it when the quads at idle...

maybe its not from the engine then. when you rev it does it make the noise? whats it sound like? could it be coming from the tranny?

Ya when i rev it thats when I hear the noise, it sounds like as if the heat shield from the exhaust was loose but I checked all the bolts and they are all tight.

is it ticking?it might be the timing chain

does it have skid plates?
mine drove me nutts
had to put something in there to absorb the vibration
only on high rev also

no it doesnt have skid plates, the noise sounds like its coming from inside the engine..

Ya sounds like vibration from inside the engine, I noticed my tensioner seems to be jammed? Is there a way to check if the timing chains stretched to much?

What does this mean? Can you describe how you put the tensioner back on? Why did you replace all the gaskets? Was there any problems or anything not go smooth when putting it back together ? Alot of detail goes a long way to us helping you.

Well I never screwed around with the tensioner before, but when I go to loosen it off I cant even get the nut to budge, but anyway I have the valve cover head off, and is that taken apart enough to tell if the chains stretched, I can wiggle it back and forth on the sprocket and it moves up and down slightly so im not sure how much play I should have?

How did you change the guides, if you didn't remove the tensioner? I'm sorry if I misunderstood you.

When I re-did the engine I took the tensioner out just by taking out the 2 bolts holding it onto the outside of the case, since i couldnt get the center bolt to release.

whenever the tensioner is taken out, it will go to the maximum adjustment. without resetting it, it will prematurely wear the chain.

You say center bolt, but do you mean screw? I think its easier to get off while still on the bike. I have trouble with that screw also. I use an impact driver and it works well to get the screw out. Do you know how to reinstall, if you get the screw out? You have to back off the adjuster and bolt it back in place while holding the screw.

Well I guess I haven't been removing it properly, iv always taken those two bolts out without relieving the tension first, so that tensioners probably no more good?

Its not bad to take it off without relieving the tension, but when you put it back on. It still might be fine.

lol well ya I have put it back on with the tension still on it and have rode it a bit... How much play should you have on your timing chain anyway?

Well the tensioner seems to be fine still, it still retracts and doesnt push in at all, when changing the timing chain do you really have to change the gears to?

Anyone have any input on having to change the gears also?

NO the chain is the only issue.

Alright thanks a lot, I wasn't sure since I know your supposed to change chain and sprocket at the same time, but since the timing chain is different I wasn't 100% sure.. Thanks
