OK so I've seen the cross reference chart that says you can use 86 spindles on an 88/89 frame setup with 88/89 hubs.

I just bought a set of 86 spindles on ebay, and the area where the tie rod connects to looks like a seperate tab of metal bolted onto the spindle itself, whereas on my current spindles it is one forged/cast piece.

So what's the diff? I've got an 89 frame coming, using 86 a-arms (for now) and 86 spindles, with 88 hubs.

88-89 hubs wont fit on 86 spindles
86 spindles will only accept 86-87 hubs

nevermind jhtx250r beat me to it :)

for reference, i also learned the hardway (read spent alot of unnecessary $$) that 88 spindles/hubs are a little different than 89

Well crap; that damn spreadsheet misled me a bit. I just bought 86 spindles that I have no use for then. Bummer!

Ok here's the deal; I got my '86 spindles in the mail today from ebay, and they are in primo shape, with the disc guards.

I also have my existing set of 88 hubs, in good shape, bearings/seals also in good shape, PLUS a set of 88 hubs with discs that I just bought on ebay for the discs alone.

One of my existing spindles is f'ed up; that's why I bought the 86's not knowing the hubs weren't interchangeable. So either I need new hubs or new spindles. What would you do?

If anybody needs 88/89 hubs or 86 spindles, and has 88/89 spindles or 86/87 hubs for trade, let me know- I'd be willing to make a trade.

Thanks!!

You should convert over to 400ex spindles and use your 88-89 hubs.

you can only use the 89s on the 400ex... the 88 year is unique..

I dont think thats true. i think the only difference is the 88 dont use the collar in the hubs due to the spindle not being tapered. the 89 has a spacer between the bearings for the spindle because its tapered. if you look at aftermarket hubs they are for 88-89 spindles. i have a set of nacs hubs on my 400ex spindles

yep, so they claim... but my aftermarket hubs are sitting a box because I cant use them on my 88 spindles... and so are a pair of 400ex hubs...

and Im not going to mess up the bearings and seals to pull them out and remove the collar.

just trying to help you avoid all the headaches and worthless parts I acquired over my winter maintenance rebuild..

i think its a moot point anyway since he will be using 86 hubs.. ;)

atvmxr, look inside your 400ex hubs from the back (where the biger bearing is) if you see a tapered coller on the inside between the two bearings, you must remove the bearings and reassemble with out the coller.
That coller in the center is the only diffrence between 88-89 250r hubs and 400ex hubs, with that removed that will solve your problem.

Are you guys sure about the 88 and 89 spindles being different? The spindles on my 88 (damaged and tossed them years ago, replacing with 450R) took the stock 400ex hubs without issue.

It was the 87's (and I think late 86's, if I remember the microfiche correctly) that had the step in the spindle and required you to pull the spacer out.

Im not replying to this anymore, I have told you what I KNOW IS TRUE from recently dealing with the issue and wasting a few hundred dollars on parts I cant use. (I dont consider having to pull out and replace seals and bearings being a useable part)

if you dont believe me, feel free to learn for yourself.

So I looked at my 250R microfiche for the spindles and the hubs.

First, the spindles. Yes, Honda lists them as different, But.........

Spindles

But, the hubs on the '88 and 89 are the same.

Again the only difference is the spacer in between the bearings on the 89 hub. The 88 doesn't have the spacer. If your buying hubs for 88 spindles then you have to take the spacer out. If your spending hundreds on hubs and aren't willing to remove the spacer then purchase some 89 spindles or 400ex spindles.
