Hey I am looking at getting a used yfz450 and I was wondering what is a good amount of hours. Like not so many that the motor is about to give but just a happy medium for a used quad..

Also, I am looking at an 04 with "approximately 100 hours on it." is 100 hours too many to risk dealing with? I don't even know if that measurement is really very accurate but I don't know for sure haha.

All help and opinions is/are appreciated.
Thanks!

100 is low for a yfz. Mine has well over 1000 hours and still runs fine. As long as you take care of it you will be fine.

1000 hours with everything the same? I didn't think the stock piston would last that long. I guess if you don't ride it hard it's possible.

I have well over 1000 hours (1356 accoring to hours meter) on my 04, and it was running strong, untill I tore it apart today, to install big bore, stroker crank, stage 3 cams, and head port and polish. All the stock internal parts look new.

The Only maintenence I have performed up until now, change the clutch out for a hinson set up (stock clutch was still good), and regular oil changes, about every 25-30 hours. Outside of that this is the first time I have every had the motor apart, and as I said, all internal parts looked like new.

i could be wrong but i remeber reading in dirtwheels that these new high compression motors generally speaking last up to around 100 hours. that was like the point where they said you should start thinking about rebuilding or freshnig up the top end. seemd low to me i dont know if that was racing hours or trail hours or if it even matters

That's with a season of xc and I don't baby it at all. I ride motocross too. They will last longer than you think as long as your not bouncing off the rev limiter at every shift. I just keep my throttle screw in about 1/2 way to keep my revs down.

Also don't listen to dirtwheels.

Maybe that's my problem lol. I'm always bouncing off of my limiter. I've been trying my best to get at least a year off of my topend before I rebuild it. I've been averaging more like every six months. I don't race anymore but when I do ride I'm most often riding like I'm racing.
