I have to pull a honda accord about 30 miles, and was wondering if it would be alright to hook up a strap to my moms kia sportage (06), it has a 6 cylinder, I dont want to hurt my moms suv or anything. thanks, neil

30 miles is an awfully long way to tow with a strap.
2 or 3 miles might be ok, but 30 I'd say is pushing your luck.

go to your Uhaul. get a car dolly trailer and use that. It will cost $100 tops and will be safe and legal.

Not with a Kia.

It's not a matter of GO power, it's STOPPING power.

I wouldnt tow something with a strap that far. When you brake the other car has to brake just right too. With the U-Haul car dolly trailer things its connected to the other vehicle so the 1 vehicle controls the braking and there isnt any slack.

if you, or anyone you know, are AAA members, you can have it towed for free.

i hate when people put down Kia. They are great cars and have plenty of power. The 05+ sportages have either a 4 cyl or 6 cyl and the 6 shouldn't have a problem with pulling a like 3000lb car.

dude read his post.....his not putting down the pulling power of the kia...hes talking about the stopping power...

and i agree...i highly doubt that a kia sportage or what ever seriously has the breaking capabilites or the trailer break hook ups to pull and stopp 3000+ lbs...and thats hwat your gonna be looking at after you figure in the car and the weight ....

some good advice is safe your self the legal troubles and the harm that could be inflicted and find someone to tow it for you

alright, dont start talking **** on kia until you have owned one. My sister has had two. A 2005 rio which never had ONE problem in the 3.5 years she had it. ONly reason she no longer has it is because it was hit by a drunk driver when it was parked on the street in frnt of my house and it was totaled.

Now she has a 08 Spectra 5 and let me tell you. I drive it everyonce in a while becuase of how fun it is to drive. Its sporty, peppy and it gets up to speed faster than both my dads 5 speed wrangler and my moms F-150.

AND my girlfriend has an 05 optimum LX and again, great quality vehicle and never has had a problem in the time she has owned it. Kia is just a branch of hyndai and until you work on one (which i have) and driving one, stop knocking them.

after checking online, the sportage (depending on year) has up to a 2000lb towing capacity. Thats probably figuring it from towing from the bumper. If it has a hitch, 3000 should be fine for only 30mi on the highway.

For the price uhaul is gonna want to rent a trailer or even car dolly. You could prolly have it towed for the same price if not cheaper.

it would be highly unadvisable to tow on the Highway,
using a strap.
Besides it is illegal in most, if not all states.

I still suggest using AAA, or a tow dolly, or a towbar.

I picked up a very decent towbar from Harbor Frieght Tools, for $49. The exact same towbar at Camping World is over $120.

hahaha. Well yea, its not bad for what it is, but people i know are always bashing kia. Sorry if i sounded realy defensive. I just dont see anything wrong with them. They seem to have really reliable motors and they are put together very well now a days. Not too sure about when they first came out but oh well.

For about 30mi, just find a friend with a trailer, use a come-along and pull it onto the trailer and then use a truck to tow it home. Simple as that..lol

The question isnt about power to pull, like said before, can it stop the car and can the other car stop.

I wouldnt advice using a tow strap, main because a vehicles brake booster doesnt work unless there is vacuum going to it from a running motor. This will make braking manual which is hard.

I would just get a car dolly for the sportage and tow it.

I agree with the tow strap being shady. My dad pulled me once across town when my little 4cyl Dodge Dakota died. Without the engine there is no power steering or brakes. I about plowed into him stopping. I remember I couldn't push the brakes hard enough. I was even pulling on the steering wheel for leverage to the point I felt I was gonna rip it off ....

Yea then the gas to go get it, then the problems it may have pulling it/stopping it, with the kia. I wasnt sure on prices ive never rented from uhaul. Was just pointing out another option he may try!

My girl has the new KIA Soul and to tell you the truth this car looks great and seems to be put together better than my ford escape or my Jeep Grand Cherokee.

As for towing with the KIA.. Get a dolly and go the 30 miles. I don;t know if I would do it on the highway but if you take it easy and really plan ahead stopping distance will be effected but if your careful you should be ok..
