i race cmc series in california.. and you can race a 250r or a 525 ktm on the same class.. i wonder if a fully race 250r win races vs race 450s.. i had i long travel suspencion 250r but i was afraid on to jump on it.. as the power band its crazy hit...

Well it doesnt matter how fast a bike is if your afraid to jump you wont win! If your allowed to use a ktm 525 then you may be messing with bigger beasts than just a stock 450R. A big bore 450 or even a 525 with pipe and things will rock. I would think you need atleast a 310 or 330 built R. Thats bike wise. Now if you work hard and get jumping and timing down. Then it doesnt matter what you ride skill has alot to do with it.

In a true 250cc r never not a chance. Now, you put a 330 or 350 powervalve on it and learn how to ride it, thats a whole new can of worms imo.

Yes, when comparably built and properly ridden, a 250R is very competetive with these newer quads. And IMO, you don't need a 330 or 350 with a powervalve to be competitive.

We're using a 330 non PV with no issues at all running at the front of the pack full of 450's.

A stock cylinder with a decent port job and a matching pipe is enough to race with the 4 strokes.Everyone fears them because of their big hp,but in reality,on a track you can only go so fast and the fact that a 2 stroke hits its peak quicker kinda evens everything out.Biggest question is,can the rider ride a 2 stroke?

It is a 310 non-pv,but I ran about as well with my ported stock setup.

Great video, nothing better than hearing that two stroke come into a corner and then power out...Makes me miss track days!

I think you could have beaten that pak of 3 riders on a mountain bike!:)

Those guys pretty much started out with me in beginner 5 years ago. now we all run the over 30 class. The guy right behind me was entered in the "Open" class, but was the only one entered so they stuck him with us.I think he is about 17 or 18( Im 39)and has been racing for about 3 years. That was slow night at the track, there is usually one or 2 more guys there that battle with me up front.Great stress release at the end of the week.

dave83,
let's not bring the age factor into it...I'm 41 and FEEL like i still ride like an 18yr old:)
At our local tracks they call my class the "Over the hill" class....Couldn't they pick a better tag name???

I know its tough to swallow, but a oem cylinder r will have a very hard time keeping up with a full blown race 450 with all the bells and whistles. Someone said about the power coming on harder evening things out, that cant be farther from the truth, that is exactly what gives the 4 stroke the advantage. Rider is 90% though. Im not saying that you cant do it but if you have a decent rider on a built 450 its gonna be a hard day. Dont get me wrong, I have 2stroke in my blood and would probably never buy a 450 but I believe it takes more than a oem cylinder with a port job to beat it. I said about a powervalve because it is your best option, a well built non p/v pro x jug is a worthy advesary for sure.

You know, whatever,I know what Ive done.Track riding comes down to rider more than bike.I watch it every weekend,I get beat by some guys on bone stock 450's and I beat the crap out of some seriously modded 4 strokes with mine. The point is,a 50+hp 4 stroke will never reach peak hp on a track where you ride mostly in 3-5th gear.A 2 stroke engine of 30 hp that is setup for low end power will be more than worthy on most local tracks. Not a 2 stroke vs 4 stroke debate, just useable hp vs. useable hp.
