I have a problem with my exhaust getting extremely, EXTREMELY hot. What kind of aftermarket heatshield can I get to cool that thing off? Any link would be GREATLY appreciated.

well... when i bought my 450 i was worried about the heat and i was told to ride faster! from the dealer lol i have ridding boots now so i don't even notice the heat.. improper jetting can cause excessive exhaust heat also..

My cousin's is stock, and it's hot. Mine just has an exhaust, with stock jetting. Surely they make aftermarket heatshields.

This works well, and does not look too bad. Had one on my old KFX450, before I broke the frame.

You could wrap your exhaust with header tape by DEI, which is sold in most high performance auto parts stores.

You can also ceramic coat your header - inside and out. But Dadio's heat wrap will be most proberly the cheapest.

How much cooler did it keep your header pipe? That heatshield. Can you touch it?

Also, how well does that tape work?

I would not recommend ever touching your headpipe, regardless of what kind of heat shielding you have installed. The heat shields are not designed to cool your pipe, there more to keep your boots/legs from touching the hot pipe.

The one I posted stays fairly cool. If you were to accidently touch it (the heat shield not the pipe), with your bare hand, it would not be hot enough to burn you. It will still be hot tho.

I used to use the tape on my kids YFZ when he was wearing over the boot riding pants. The tape stayed cool enough so it didn't melt the pant's, however, I never grabbed it with my hand.

If you use the tape, you must dry it out after you wash the quad. I ran the motor for about 10 min. then blew it dry with a leaf blower, or you could wrap the header with plastic while you are washing it.

Well, I wore shorts trail riding all day yesterday, never touched my exhaust, and have a blister bigger than a dollar coin on my leg.

I just want to be able to ride all day in shorts, without a problem. If I use tape, or that heatshield, will this happen?

Also, do all exhausts on YFZs get this hot?

If I was you, and wanted to ride in shorts, maybe a combination of the 2. I never ride in shorts, always riding pants, and MX boots.

As for the heat, I know my exhaust glows in the dark, at the head pipe, when I am riding. A nice dull red color.

I found this posting on another forum, same issues as you, maybe you can find some info on it to help.

That didn't tell me much, besides "they all run that hot, wear pants". Somedays it's just too hot to wear pants while trailriding. I know riding pants "keep you cool" or whatever, but I just prefer to wear shorts.

Thanks for the replies and help though, guys.

So there's nothing you can do, at all? That's about retarded.
