hello i recently purchased a 2001 honda 400ex
the day after i got it i was riding it hard for about 30 minutes.

in 5th gear topping out i heard a decently loud "POP" noise from the engine bay area.

I replaced the spark plug and ended up taking off the head trying to search for the problem.

The engine has no problem turning over, the Carb looked good and had no problem with gas flow it seemed.

All sounds normal it just seems as if maybe a line is clogged???

When i looked into the Engine head one of the pistons had standing oil around it where the others didnt. maybe that will help???

Here are some

sorry im a noob lol, the cylinder rods i guess they are called? the four that are in the engine head....

Uhm...no it doesnt run but it will turn over.

someone i asked said it might be a ring in one of the cylinders making it lose compression.

maybe that will help i hope.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

so when it popped it died then? or did you stop and it wouldn't restart? you'll have oil by your valve train components, no worry there..

pull your spark plug out and put it in the boot and hold the rubber part and make the spark plug touch the head and crank the engine, you should be able to see if your getting spark.. i'd start there...

everybody has to learn some time about these thing or everybody would be in the poor house even worse if we took it to a dealer and paid 85 bucks an hour to get work done..

i originally thought it was the spark plug, i replaced it and already check the boot for spark, and it is perfectly fine sparking like a champ.

yea i know they are exposed to have oil, but only one of the valves had standing oil around it which i considered odd.

maybe something happened to that rod and it wont work???

it popped in 5th gear when i was topping it out and when i heard it it started dieing so i pulled in the clutch and rode it till it died.

on the shifter side take out the big plug, i think it's 8mm allen head and take a 17mm socket and ratchet and rotate the engine clock wise. since you have the valve cover off you can watch you valves move. the two on the intake side should move at the same time and the two exhaust should move at the same time. if you take the spark plug out you'll be able to rotate the engine around easier..

You need a service manual... or a mechanic.

400EX's are famous for popping the pickup coil on the stator. One bit of advise and please don't take offense to this, its just a saying, K.I.S.S Keep It Simple Stupid. I would almost be willing to bet you lost spark and that why it wouldn't start. Check it out man.
