SICK! does Saleen buy the Stangs from Ford and then do their own thing to them? never quite understood how that works.

i believe that ford sends saleen so many mustangs, saleen does their thing, and then they go through ford dealerships to be sold.

I seen a saleen s7 or w.e. and a lambo on the same road the other day in orlando. they werent side by side but it was on the same strip so I thought it was pretty crazy.

Wrong. Saleen has their own plant and actually manufactuers them through their plant. They issue their own vin numbers so if you wanted to get technical it's not even a mustang.

i wouldn't even call that getting technical, if its not manufactured by ford then it shouldn't be badged as a mustang...

One is prolly the number of saleens made so far that year an the other one is the motor that's in it i think.. but i ain't a ford fan so just stabbing in the dark here

yeah i thought the number on the front was for the engine cubic inches, and the number on the back was for the cubic inches, like on the saleen f150s they have 331(5.4) on the front of them, and on the mustangs it says 281(4.6) on them, is that mustang a 4.8 or 4.9?

number on the bumper is the serial number,

281 is how many cubic inches the motor is, 4.6L=281ci

Quarter-mile performance for the 2003 S281 is 14.0 sec at 99 miles an hour; 0-60 mph time is around 5.1 sec

Powered by a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter (281 cid) SOHC V8, the S281 crank out a healthy 290 bhp at 5,100 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm.

lame-stock 08 gt will beat this car

i'm a huge mustang fan, right now i have an '03. someday i would love to get an 03 or 04 cobra. those are amazing. 390 hp i think :macho

Plus the stock lower on the 03-04 cobra's can handle like 1000hp, its a sick ride for sure

Nice ride, The number on the front bumper is the number it was made, so it was the 289th made in 03 or whatever. The number on the back "281" is the model/cubic inches of the motor.

His is the 281, the supercharged ones are the S281's

Not unless it's a 281 sc. Still a sick car. I'd love to have one of the last year s351's. Those are by far probably one of my favorite all time cars. I've always had a thing for saleen's. We have a 98 cobra. It runs pretty good, but nothing like a saleen.

Saleen has 3 different tiers to them.
S281 - Basically stock GT with body kit
S281 SC- Supercharged and tuned
S281E - Supercharged and internals fully redone - 450+ horse

I dunno if I would go that far. I couldn't really see stock internals of a cobra handling up to 1000hp. Now with forged internals I could see that without a problem.

I believe the only vehicles to use a supercharged 5.4 are the GT500 and the Lightning. The Cobra R used a 5.4, but it wasn't supercharged.

That's the thing about the 03/04 Cobra's, they DO have forged internals. Forged steel crank, forged Manley rods from the factory, forged pistons... That's why these cars are so sought after and can make huge HP numbers on a "stock block" no problem; they have built bottom ends from the factory.

The Lightning, on the other hand, with it's supercharged SOHC 5.4L V8 has a forged steel crank, forged pistons, but the same crappy powder steel rods that every other SOHC 5.4L V8 has. That is why you see many Lightning owners starting to throw rods out the bottom end once they hit about 500 RWHP. The crap rods (toothpicks) just can't handle it.

That's why a 03/04 Cobra can make 600+ on a stock bottom end, yet the Lightning is limited to much less.

Completely diff subject, but pre 2000 powerstrokes had forged rods, they changed to powdered rods in some late 00, and after late 00 they were all powdered.

There's a kid around here with what I believe is an 01 , not sure, GT, that will flat out smoke a 05 Dodge diesel with intercooler, intake, exhaust, high ram, Smarty TNT.

That mustang is a bad mofo. I know the kid but I haven't talked to him in a while, I don't know what he has done to the car but it will get it.

I can vouch that he speaks the truth. :chinese: I've read alot about 03-04 Cobra's lately. They can't handle 1000hp though. People are getting about 700RWHP before having to upgrade the bottom end and do a straight axle swap. That IRS set up handle's about 650hp safely.

Edit- And just for a note, A kenne bell 2.2l supercharger- which is a bolt on part- will boost an entirely stock cobra from 390 rwhp to 550 rwhp. That's without an ECM tune, exhaust, anything... As much as I love LS1 cars, Chevy can't touch that. I've gained alot of respect for the Cobra after researching them... I did my fair share of bashing when Mean250R got his but after I spent about a week reading article after article on them, I take back every negative thing I've said about them.

what about the mid 90s cobras? did they have the forged internals and good bottom? you could throw a kenne belle on one of those and save A LOT of money, those year cobras don't go for all that much compared to the 03 and 04s... but i'm not a fan of that body style at all :ermm:

700rwhp to 1000hp i was close, im not a mustang guy i just here my buddy talking a lot about the 03-04 cobra being able to hold a lot on the stock bottom. Still 700rwhp on a stock bottom end is pretty amazing.

jk i know a 300 hp difference is a lot

Saleen Inc is classified as a manufacturer, they did not issue their own VIN numbers. They didn't actually manufacture a mustang, they modified a mustang GT and other Ford vehicles with gauges, engine mods, fascia, suspension, etc. The two cars that I know they did manufacturer from the ground up is the S7 and S5 Raptor prototype. Many people probably don't know that they did all the assembly and paint on the Ford GT for Ford. Saleen Inc numbers all their cars and thats why there is a number on the bumper.

maybe in the quarter mile, but lets see the saleen kill a 08 gt on the track.

Saleen's we built for road racing with suspension being there biggest upgrade. Steve Saleen started making Saleen Stangs during his Road Racing career.

So a 08 gt might have more power but a Saleen handles a hell of a lot better.

thats what i thought, that is not the actual VIN for the car, it is issued a ford VIN for titling purposes....the VIN that saleen stamps into the chassis is just a way of distinguishing it as a saleen if something should ever happen and you can't tell by the appearance.

Wrong, 96-98 was a 4v motor similar to the one used in the 99 & 01 Cobra, and the 03-04 Mach 1. Had potential to make good power.

Basically the S281 has a catback exhaust, underdrive pulleys, air silencer removed, and a K&N filter in the performance department. The suspension setup, however, is MUCH nicer than that of a stock GT.

That being said, is it worth the extra cash over a GT? Not in my opinion... but still nice to have if you can afford it.

The "VIN" number they are referring to in that article is the production number that is on the bumper. That number is stamped in 3 different spots on the car and one spot that only Saleen knows. It's just the production # of the car and where it was in the Saleen production line. One of the reasons Saleen put these numbers on their cars was to eliminate anyone replicating it and saying it's a Saleen. It's only a real Saleen if it has those numbers stamped on it in the various locations. However, it's not an actual VIN that you would give to DMV. The VIN you would give DMV is the 17 digit # Ford assigns each Mustang during the actual manufacturing process of the car.

I've been on that site a few times and there are some pretty impressive cars over there. Yes, a motor may hold 1000rwhp, but the question is for how long. Stock compenents are still stock. I wouldn't trust a stock drivetrain setup for half that power IMO. At 1000rwhp you'd eat everything from the flywheel back.

Throw a built push rod in a stang and you'll have 500 NA. Don't get me wrong the cobra's are awesome cars, I love them, but just not a huge modular motor fan. Call me old school if you will. Our 98 cobra (up saled gt) isn't bad for what it is. Still haven't put the kenne bell on yet, but who knows when that will ever happen. Personally, I'd rather have a charged 460 in a stang. Could probably build it for 3/4's the price as well.
