why dont they make these things with 6 gears? i just feel like its got all the power it needs to have alot more topend and still not loose alot of power, i takeoff in 2nd or 3rd(on a downhill) and i never have a problem, but i run out of gain real quick, i would like to get like 5-10mph more topend out of this thing and as far as i know the sprockets are stock, is that much even possible without some serious cash investing? i wouldnt complain if i had to start in 1st again, since the hmf pipe and sparks key and the cdi and whatnot i now need the speed to match the power. and since the new shocks work extremely well with the new a arms i think i will be able to handle the extra speed. :D :D any good advice?

if you're starting in 2nd or 3rd gear, definitely try a bigger front sprocket. for <$10 it's worth a shot.

Yeah, me too. I rode a friend's Banshee that was on the cover of Dirt Wheels a long time ago, and it was way too much for me. They're a blast in the dunes, but a handfull in the dirt. That being said, nothing beats going up the face of a huge dune and shifting UP a couple of times.:macho

never own another 2 smoker again and i love my 400, i checked i have 15 tooth on the front and 38 on the rear, whats stock? its a moose racing rear, cant tell on front. were would be the smart place to start bigger rear or front? i never had to even look at the sprockets on this because when i bought it they were both visibly new as well as the chain. i dont have my own book i get one from the library if i need to use it that bad.

im trying to be as cheap as possible without being cheap, im not gonna bore it. i would love a stock size 10.5:1 piston with a big stroker kit i hear them run very good and are still very reliable. but not now i just want to get some speed up to match the power.

15/38 is stock. You'll want to go with a larger front or smaller rear. For the sake of cash, I'd recommend starting with a 16T front and see how you like it.

just wondering can you mix and match actual gears like you can for the cars? The 2005+ actually have all different ratios and thats why they run 14/39 sprockets and they come out just 1MPH slower than the 99-04. So i'm thinking if you were to take the 2005+ 5th gear and put it on the 99-04 transmission you might have a real long 5th gear and all the rest of your gears would still pull like they did before. Just a thought applying things for cars for atv's

A 350X six speed tranny might be sweet. I don't know about the logistics of doing something like that, but it sounds good, nevertheless.

Its done in cars all the time people have real short gearing for acceleration but they put in a long 5th gear to get good gas mileage cruising around. Never really checked out how the gears fit in on the 400ex but I dont see why this wouldnt work.

max sprocket u'll fit on the front is a 16t.sounds like a small adjustment but it gives good top end gains, maybe drop 1t on the rear to give it a little more,i have a 440 kit and run 16 front,36 rear, pure mx racing tho.john
