View Full Version : who rides quads and bikes?

I busted my quad frame again pretty good. I am thinking of turning it into a trail only quad. I have the original a-arms, spindles, and shocks to put it back to 2006 stock setup. I would only need to buy a used rear axle. I love riding a quad for XC more than I ever liked riding a bike in the woods. Plus, my wife rides a quad in the woods and we ride year round.

I have to admit that I enjoyed my 1999 WR400 on the track (I stripped all the lights off it, and changed the timing, and put aftermarket bars on it). I am thinking I might go back to dirt bikes on the track. The main reasons are maintenance costs, easier transportation, and most tracks are designed for bikes...in fact more and more tracks in NC are allowing bikes only especially on weekends.

Anyone else go with this combo? Does it mess you up switching back and forth?

/Jon

I've got both.

I mostly race my YFX450 but sometimes I race my DRZ400S. I like both and love racing both.

I only do XC races.

No full size MX bike right now. Someday I'd like to pick up a 125 for fun.

i ride both and as much as i love the quad, i take the dirtbike probably 75 percent of the time now.

the quad has all stock suspension so it really beats the hell outta you. i feel like i have pushed it as far as it can go and if i try to go any faster im just going to get hurt.

on the dirtbike, its IS race ready. the forks are a little stiff but i might have to drain out a couple ML of fluid out to make them a bit softer.

theyre both fun for different reasons but im starting to have alot more fun on the dirtbike.

this on is an MX track BTW

I feel that, on an MX track, there is nothing more fun that a built race quad.

I ride my dirtbikes most of the time, simple reason, lack of LEGAL places to ride quads. If a a legal place opened, it would be a different story, it would be 50/50.

i rode my friends race ready LTR and yea i would love to makemy quad like that but i got a RACE READY bike for 3200. and once you get decent on dirtbikes theyre actually alot of fun. plus most of my friends at the track have bikes so they help me on alot of stuff.

I switch it up... lil different than most. I race XC with my 450R and have a street legal KTM 525EXC. I'd like to get another bike to keep strictly in the dirt though.

I ride a CR125 and a 400EX. I rode dirtbikes for 9yrs, then went to the street for 6 yrs and will never get out of the dirt again. picked up a 2000 kx125 a year and a half ago for $600 (beat up) sold it for $1400 scored an insane cr125 for 1500 and treated myself to a new 400ex since I never had a quad and I love it. I can't do 80' jumps anymore but the bike is still fun and I just can't let it go.

I went from an 04' TRX450R to an 04' CRF450R. Heres my take on it, Hitting jumps (track or natural) i prefer the Bike. Monster hill climbs (that quads can't do) obviously the Bike. But just average to big hills, or technical hills i like the Quad, and for just ripping ***** threw the woods and stuff i prefer the Quad. I'm better on the Quad than the Bike, but i can go Bigger/Faster on the Bike!

Simply... i love'em both!

Heck yeah man! They're a lot of fun to dink around on but I'm really getting an itch to pick up a full size dirt bike. Anyone have a 125 they wanna get rid of cheap?

i went from a 400ex to a yz250f and making the switch wasn't that hard at all. and now when i hop on my friends quads at the track it doesnt seem like i've lost much talents (not that i ever had any on a quad though lol).... but i think if i had my bike and a race ready quad.... the quad would get riden about once a year

I have a 250r that has spent more time apart since I bought it in 05 then it has been ridden. I think I may have 8hrs on it since I got it. Not that it doesn't run, but just changing to different carbs and other stuff has left it sitting. I got a King Quad700 back in late 2006 and my buddy bought a Grizzly. The Ute thing is fun, just to go beat around and use the winch to pull yourself out. Then we bought 09 KX450f's a few months ago and I haven't started the quads since.

Like someone else said, most places are made for bikes, even the non legal riding spots are mostly cut out by bikes. You can easily throw them in the truck and they are race ready from the showroom. I have stacks of tires and wheels for quads just sitting. Nothing like the feeling of railing a berm on a bike. I'd love to ride both, but the dirtbike is just too easy to use to resist.

my frame has so many gussets that this was one of the few places left it could break. :p

I was jumping all day Sunday at NCMP. I knew something wasn't feeling right about my quad but I didn't notice the frame was broke again. I was washing it yesterday when I discovered this. The only thing holding it on was the bolt that fastens the gas tank to the frame.

Here is one of the custom gussets besides the full Lonestar kit...

hence my post...I am thinking about getting a dirt bike for mx and retiring this quad to trail use only. This is really my last quad anyhow. I don't plan on dumping another 6-8k in a new 6k quad ever again. If I did, it would be a Suzuki or Yamaha...something where I can get by with stock suspension and width, etc.

your frame prob broke because its too rigid. it needs to be able to flex and it looks to me (maybe im wrong) that you have entirely too many gussets in the frame.

His frame has broken many times before and like most, added gussets. Jon isnt easy on quads:p

Jon, we are eventually switching to bikes. Cody will still race the quad and do test stuff with them, but from a $$ stand point, I cant afford to keep him on a quad.

That is the only piece of my frame that is left. I just have one big gusset. :eek2: Eventually we will get it built up enough that it won't be able to leave the ground so it should stop the bleeding. :D

I hear that Pappy. It is hard to want to afford riding quads. I can think of other things I would like to do with the money. I am 1/2 tempted to go back through all my credit card bills and invoices to see how much I spend on these things...but then I don't want to know. I will say this for sure...I've lost more in my retirement plans than I've ever spent on quads.

If I added it up ...I am pretty sure I would be single:p

Money aspect aside...when Cody is ready to race the bike I will actually be able to watch him race and pit for him...something I havent been able to do with the quads:p

quick investment lesson...

You have $100 invested in the stock market (let's say the whole market) and the market drops 50%...then you have $50. The next day the market goes right back up the 50% it dropped. You now have $75. The difference when it went down was you had $100 invested and went it went up you only had $50 invested. I only point this out because I hear people talking how the market recovered...but for most, it did not.

That is really cool. The amazing thing is Cody knows to appreciate it and doesn't act like he is entitled. Wrenching is the next best thing to riding and taking video. :p Taking pictures is too much work. :(

the stock market did recover some, not all that much. I should be at near $200,000 now with a good market. I'm still down ~40g's less than I invested, it was down more, but raising atleast, slowly. I know others who were down more than 50%, closer to 70%, they are nearing 50% now.

Started out on quads, and loved them. Had a 250x, and a 250r and 450r decked out to race. I would kill to have some of that money back that I blew on parts and maint. After I sold my 450r, picked up a brand new CRF 250X. Liked it so much, I picked up a KTM 200XC and haven't even considered going back to quads. Just the money I am saving on maint and parts is worth it. Plus the bikes are a LOT easier on your body. Don't get me wrong the quads were fun, but for me a bike is the way to go now.

Just parted out my 2+ year hybrid project after being a quad rider all my life.
Picked up an 09' CRF250R and could not have made a better choice. I LOVE quads, but they are impractical for MX. There are no tracks to ride, very expensive, heavy, maintenance intensive, easy to break, and harder to haul. Did I mention how expensive they are and that there is no where to ride them?
Brand new 09' race ready ride for $6000 otd. Bikes are a bit more challenging to ride in a way I am taking a liking to.

That's bass ackwards from everyone else. Lol. 2001 CR250... the fastest ever made. Sweet quad too.

If I remember, I'll post up some pics of my two wheeler of another flavor.

i wish i rode a dirt bike also. i kinda do. i have an XR650L. made for the street but i like to hit my mini kicker with it. i wish i could buy a 125 or a 250 this year but i guess i'm going to help the woman get another quad instead. maybe next year :ermm:

I race XC on my 300, but Im trying to get a smaller bike just to do a little MX on and mainly get a feel for a bike.

I want to get a crotch rocket in the next year or so, but I figured it'd make more sense to learn how to ride a bike a little first.

I am going to rent a bike over the 4th while at Breezewood and see how I like it. I did get my quad frame welded again to last me until I make a decision.

Choice #1 - stock frame, probably used and 450r mx becomes trail only. Buy a new 2009 450 bike for mx.

Choice #2 - buy a Lonestar chromoly frame for the 450r and keep riding it for mx only and ride the 400ex in the woods.

I will never trade my quad for a bike in the woods.

I already have an 8.5' by 24' trailer. I look ridiculous now showing up at the track with 1 quad in it. I will look even more silly with only a dirt bike. :D The trailer is really for when we take 3-4 quads out trail riding especially in the winter months.

#3- Buy the LSR chassis and the bike and be done with it, the economy can use you:devil:

Interesting, very interesting. I've had street bikes once I was able to drive. I'm 48 & have had 3 quads. never , well I had a dirtbike (KDX250) I rode it but never enough to be good at it. I only got it cause I bought the boys honda 70's & you can't teach a kid to ride a dirtbike if you don't have one. Right? She was only mad for for the week. (I can take it :macho ) Us 3 boys each had a dirtbike & a quad. To much - you can only ride so much, even though we wanted to ride every day.

Maybe I should look @ a honda 230F

up until a month ago i was ridng both. it dont mess me up switching back and forth. both of them are second nature to me. i can jump on a quad after three months of not riding and look like i been riding every day for a year lol. i love both machines. i only got rid of the quad for cost reasons. i find i dont break stuff on the bike as easily... the quad i broke something every other ride and i got tired of fixing it.. or else just looking at it in the garage lol. the bike is almost back together now... im itching to ride

I can't ride a dirtbike. Can't use a twist throttle.. don't even know how to turn because my leg is so jacked I can't put it on the ground. I had a traumatic experience with a KX80 resulting in a big scar on my arm when I was 16 and said I would never ride a dirtbike again.

I'll just stick with quads..
