ok i just broke in fresh top end in my bike and went to change my oil and found metal shavings in my oil filter. what could it be coming from? i change my oil after every weekend of riding, and only noticed it this time.

Its from the fresh piston and rings seating into the cylinder. Dont worry its normal for this to happen during break-in.

What year is the bike? Is it the original crank and rod?

Post a picture of the filter with the shavings if u can.
Are they alum or copper/bronze color?

After the new crank and piston in my 04 was installed I had metal in my oil filters for 3-4 oil changes. I would change the oil after every ride till no more shavings.

my bike is an 05 with the stock crank and rod. whats the best way to tell if my crank needs to be replaced. the shavings are aluminum color.

best thing to do is just buy one and freshing up the bottom end.The longer you wait you could throw the rod and then you will have to replace more than to crank.Hotrod sells a good crank this is a normal problem for the 05,s,better safe than sorry is the way i look at it. good luck I hope this helps

theres always a crank bearing that goes bad in the 05's and shavings are the most common symptom.
