View Full Version : Pray for Tanner

Please keep my son in your prayers.

My wife and Tanner went to Michigan this past Tuesday to spend some time with her family. Tanner is a typical 2 year old and into everything. He was playing at a memorial service for Heathers aunt when pulled a pot of coffee over on him. He has 2 degree burns on his right arm, chest and right leg. Thankfully no burns on his face. This all happened on Thursday morning. They are currently in the burn unit in, I believe, Grand Rapids, MI, don't know the name of the hospital. The doctors and nurses are taking great care of him and he is making a slow recovery. They don't think he will need any skin grafts but they plan to keep him there until they are ready to return home on Tuesday. They also don't think there will be any scarring.

It is really hard to talk about this and that is why I have not posted anything until now. I am in Oklahoma several hours away from my baby. Heather says he is feeling fine, drinking lots of chocolate milk and watching the movie Cars. He is not eating or even wanting to eat. Everyone in the room has to be as sterile as possible to keep down the chance of infection. It could have been a lot more serious, I thank the Lord for preventing that.

It sounds like when they do get to come home he will have to be taken to Baylor Hospital in Dallas, TX everyday for at least a week or 2 to have his bandages changed and for physical therapy. Dallas is about 2 1/2 hours from home and more than likely my wife, mother-in-law and Tanner will stay down there.

All I ask is that you keep Tanner in your prayers for a speedy recover.

Thank you,

Thank you everyone!!! Your prayers are definitely at work in Tanner's little body. He started eating for the first time today. Heather brought him a happy meal and he was very excited, until she started taking everything out. She had to put it all back in the bag and about 5 minutes later he started pulling it out on his own. He ate half of his fries and burger.

So he is beginning to get his appetite back and personality to boot. One of his aunts gave him a kiss on the cheek and he immediately wiped it off, what a typical boy. It brings a lot of joy to my heart to hear these things.

I would like to get in the truck and drive thru the night to see my little boy but ultimately there is nothing I can do even if I were there, all I can do is continue to pray for him.

Again thank you all so much for your prayers and kind words.

Just heard about Tanner. Looks like his sprits are up. He is a cute little guy.

I know how you feel about not being by his side. Zack got hurt when he was little and I way up in Canada on a bear hunt and did not hear he broke his leg until 2 days after it happened. It was killing me not to be with him.

Tanner was release from the hospital today. They plan to spend another night in MI and then head home tomorrow after they see the doctor again and have his bandages change. Expect to see him on Wednesday around 8 or 10 am. I have mixed feelings about seeing him in that situation but Heather told me that he is doing really good today.

They left the hospital and went to their Aunt and Uncles house where Tanner took a 3 hour long nap and then was ready to go. He played with his new push mower (toy of course), road the tricycle and just played. I imagine it feels really good to be out of the hospital and breathe some fresh air.

Thursday we will take him to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, TX about 2.5 hours away. Then we will find out how often he has to come back, may be every day for a few days or every third day, don't know.

I can't wait to hold my son. It has been since last Monday that I saw Tanner and Heather. These kind of times can really break a spirit. It is getting easier for me to talk about it but today was by far the hardest for me. I have been trying to hold it in all this time. That is why I don't talk much on here.

I can't tell you how much it means to me to know there are so many people praying for Tanner. I hope to post some more pics of him after he is home, can't wait.

Thank you everyone,

I am looking forward to seeing Heather and Tanner in the morning and then on the other hand I am also a bit scared. I do my best to not think about them during the day, sounds bad but I guess I don't want to deal with it and don't know how to.

It's great to have so much support. Even though I am not responding to any one post directly I can guarantee you that I appreciate every response that has been given.

Heather and Tanner are home, they made it in about 7:15 a.m. This has been one of the most difficult days I have had in quite some time. It is so difficult to see him this way and to know that there is still a lot ahead. The doctors say it will take up to a year for full recovery. It is really hard when you can't hug your child for fear of hurting him. We have to be very careful in holding him.

He gave me a couple good smiles this afternoon and his personality comes out very sporadically. This is one of the toughest things I have had to deal with. I couldn't watch when Heather and her mom changes his bandages, I just can't deal with seeing his burns yet.

I will try to get some pics of Tanner up before long.

Thanks all,

He is starting to get some of his personality back, it is so good to see him smile. With that said this was again a very hard day for me especially, I had to help with his bandages and see his burns. I was not prepared for how much he is burned, they say 15%, doesn't sound like much but when you see it, 15% is a dreadfully huge amount. I just cannot believe how strong Tanner is, if I was in his condition no one would be touching me. I can see an improvement in just 1 day. Heather says he looks great compared to the first day.

The only concern we have now for him is the possibility of having skin grafts on his upper right arm and on his chest in the same area. The areas would be small but it would also mean scars and more time to heal. Please pray that God will heal him and there will be no need for any skin grafts.

Heather read through the posts today and she was really impressed and inspired by everyone's comments. She has been so tough through this entire process. Also, she had a doctors appointment to check out the pregnancy and all this trauma has not affected Zackary one bit. He is still just as active as ever if not more so.

Thank you so much for everything and especially for praying for my family.

Update on Tanner status:

Pretty well back to his old self, I really can't believe how much he has improved over the 5 days that he has been home. He is not quite to the point of being able to rough house like before but it won't be long the way he is going. As promised here are some pics of the little guy.

Today we did not have to bandage his chest, this is so awesome. The only places we have to bandage now are his right arm and right thigh. He has really come a long ways in a very short period of time. It feels so good to be able to rub his back and not feel bandages.

Okay, this is too funny as I am writing this reply he goes and does this:

Tanner is doing exceptionally well. He is completely back to normal except for those pesky bandages. We are down to just bandaging two places on his right arm and the top of his right leg. His right leg is being bandaged with neosporene.

He was just blowing on Heather's tummy and talking to his soon to be brother.

Pray is such a powerful thing and Tanner is absolute proof of this fact.

Thanks again all for your prayers.
