Hi,
I have an 06 blaster 200. I just switched to a stock pipe and now I am hearing noises from the top end area. It runs good and strong, but it's making a pretty loud tick that seems like it's coming from the top end. It could be something else rattling but I can't tell. It is 100% stock so you can hear the internals moving over the exhaust. Is this normal? Thank you!

Haha! Well I'm sure its not valves. It don't have any.

Its probably just the normal sound, they are usually pretty noisy.

Lol, yea, it cant be a valve tap, it's a 2-stroke. Thanks a lot, I guess I'll just ride it and see what happens.

maybe piston slap? A top end that is over 3 years old and ridden alot, its very possible.

What does a piston slap mean? Is the top of the piston worn? Carbon build up? Rings? Thanks.

piston slap is when the bore and/or piston is wore out and rocking back and forth inside the cylinder. Usually first, the compression gets very low and run poorly.

For sure, from what I have seen 2 yrs is about what your going to get out of a Blaster before needing a rebuild. I just did the 2nd aftermarket piston in my 2006 blaster.

You could hook a compression tester to it. It should read about 120psi.

If you're just noticing it after changing the pipe, are you sure it's not an exhaust leak?

Yeah, that or a head gasket.

Exhaust leak is the very obvious culprit

sounds like its an exhaust leak if u say that it runs reasonably good and strong. check your header bolts, where it meets with your exhaust port, and while you're at it check the gasket. i'm not positive but it should have a header gasket, maybe the yamaha dealer can tell you for sure.

Just for you info
Mat Shearer makes a killer trail pipe for the Blaster.
I have been doing R&D on Blasters for several months
Here are several dyno charts on Blasters and others.

Well, I took off the entire exhaust system and then bolted it back up making sure everything was tight. I fired her up, and it's still making the noise. I felt for exhaust leaks, and I couldn't find anything. Listening close, it sounds like chattering from the top end.

Idk it really sounds like it's the valves to me.. maybe there's a valve in your motor going around and tapping on stuff to piss you off.

A lot of after market pipe use very thin metal and makes them a little bit tingier (is that a word?)

It defiantly should be a word lol. That's why the freestyle bikes sound so badass. I've had the stock pipe on my rm250 for about a year with no problems, then i put a bill's pipe on it for 2 rides and my friend's *****head brother wanted to race and i was gona pass him and he turned right into me and his kickstarted made a nice 5" diameter dent in my pipe lol.. has more bottom end now thow lol it defiantly sounded / sounds tingey and its thinner
