Need help ASAP with K&N filter

Ok guys, I just bought a K&N air filter for my 300ex, and I have a bit of a problem. There is this pole sticking up in my airbox and the filter hits that when I try to put it in. I can't get it in because of that.

Also, should this metal insert be put into the K&N that was in the stock foam filter?

I double checked the code on the box and it is an HA-3094, indeed a 300ex filter.

i ran into the same problem. i just cut it off with a hacksaw and glued it into the hole on the bottom.

That's what I planned on doing. I managed to bend and twist it in there alright but I'm definitely going to cut that stupid thing off.
