I had done a stage 2 hotsam in my 400ex, a white bros rev box, and a moose racing jet kit, it only replaced the main jet, is there another kit i have to purchase for the pilot jet? and when I sit in neutral and rev the motor it cuts out and starts to sputter around half throttle. Anyone know a reason for that... I haven't done the oil change yet either though... if anyone can please let me know...

I don't know alot about jetting but i think the needle controls 1/4 to 3/4 throttle
someone correct me if i am wrong.
u probably want to change pilot to though

you should not have to get a new pilot but you may have to turn the fuel.air screw a bit to get it dialed in. half throttle would be your needle being off a bit. you may have to move the clip up on the needle to make it on the second one instead of the third one. this should help to clear up the bog. good luck. steve

alright, i'll give that a try, thanks. oh and whats a recommended size jet, i believe i put a 165 in there, could that be too much for it?

heres what each thing on the carb does at what time.

The main jet - 3/4 to full throttle
The needle + needle jet - 1/8 to 3/4 throttle
The pilot jet + pilot screw - idle to 1/8 throttle

this is a close estimate on what they are. it may change a bit on different carbs but it is general for all of them. steve

i believe i put a 165 in there. is the pilot jet screw the one that come out on the side of the carb? I was getting ready to order a pilot jet 42

a 165 sounds a bit rich to start with unless you have the airbox cover off. i would go down to something in the 152 range if it is a kehien jet. like bigd said we need to know everything you have done to give a decent prediction on what to do with the main. steve

no snorkel on airbox, lid on, white bros rev box, uni foam filter, moose jet kit 165 moose needle on 3 and stage 2 hot cam...

edit: i would get it running right before doing anything with a pilot if it idles for now leave it until you get the rest figured out. then you can get a 42 and go from there. i would start with a smaller main then if it still sputters do a plug chop to see where you are at. if you dont have an exhaust you should be at about a 150 or 152. with the airbox o[pen a bit go with a 154 to start. steve

how about the f/a did you turn that out too? steve

alright i appreciate it, i'll tune down the jet and see what happens from there..

It is the fuel air screw that is on the bottom of the carb. it may go away once you get the smaller main. 3rd position on the clip should be fine. steve

the f/a refresh my memory on that..

oh yeah ok, is that the one that kinda bends up into the carb from the side

honda400ex2003

edit: The one coming from the side is the idle. the f/a is the one that is in the sleeve sort of thing and is really small. so when you are done go with a 154 main, 3rd clip position and try 2.5 turns out on the fuel air screw. if it pops on decel a bit then go to 3. After that do a plug chop to see where you are at. the plug should be a good golden brown color. once you get it pretty good then you can go to a different pilot later. steve

Is your air box lid on or off ? Maybe I missed this, but what year is your ride ?

OK sorry , went back & seen that. No snorkel, but is that hole plugged or open. I would try taking the air box lid off. I with Steve, you are a little rich on the main

yeah i am not really sure why he did that, the airbox cover would do the same and you would have a bit better protection from water and sand. steve

I just took mine off & plugged it the other day. Lots more room to roll the carb now

Just use the lid from a spray paint can & the clamp off of the snorkel. I put a couple wraps of electrical tape around the lid to beef it up alittle. Works great. Found that one in an older thread.

i just may have to do it sometime. it does not really hurt anything right now since i dont have to mess with my carb at all. lol, steve

ok igot somwhere than lost it. i put a 150 jet in, it ran awesome ran smooth all the way through the throttle positions, but i wouldn't idle at all. so i dropped it down to a 140 and lost the throttle smoothnes it started sputtering again and still no idle. i noticed my spring on the what i think is the idle adjuster broke, it drops down and then has a flat head knob on the right(exhaust side) of the carb. any pointers
