I think 400ex's are great trail quads. All that reliable low-end grunt is nice - if you need lots of low end grunt.

The 250R can be a respectable trail machine as well though, and where you will really notice the difference is in the open and particularly in the dunes. the stock TRX is a great buy, but it needs mods to get it to really sing like a 250cc 2stroke should. Buying it stock with low hours nad the doing your mods one at a time is the best route, and in that case everyone should dump their 400ex for a 250R. haha :) In seriousness though, the TRX250R can be just about any machine you need it to be. It's really, really a good design and fun quad.

A 2005 400ex is probably worth $3000 or so. If you bought it new, you know how the motor is and what's been done, how it's been taken care of.

It's also a decent trail quad - fairly versatile. I personally am not a fan of the riding stance and body position on a 400ex vs a 250R. I find the 250r way more comfortable to ride.

I would choose a 250R over a 400ex anyday and even a Z400 over the 400ex but keeping in mind that a stock 250R may only be worth $1500-$2000 and since it's 20+ years old, many are beat on and not taken care of properly. They will often run well enough to take for a spin and test ride, but the fact is that many 250R's have sat for extended periods of time and if you start riding it hard and often, it will need lots of repairs and maintenance done which costs quite a lot of money. Simply replacing the plastic will run $400-$600 vs $150-$200 for a 400ex. If you ride long distances you will need an oversize tank - $100-$250 - gas an oil will be a little more costly.

Modding 250Rs also becomes highly addictive and drains the bank account.

Often people who have never had 2-strokes or grew up on them think the 250R was king and they'd like to have owned one, but then they trade their 4-poke for one and find out they don't like it and end up taking a hit trying to get back to the 4-poke.

So before you trade, take this into consideration. I and most people hear would tell you to get the 250R, but make sure it's right for you and you know what you are getting into.

If its a good 250R it could be a whole new kind of ride for you. 400ex's are a dime a dozen and still produced if you ever wanted to get a new one again they are available.

if your 400ex is running stron i would keep that... if your useing it for a trail quad tryin to do pre mix becomes a pain in the @ss some times... and i know the 400ex with the right work being done last forever! a buddy raced one got it flipped over in a huge water hole from a dumb@ss that didnt know what he was doing got it flip up right and finished the race and it hasnt gave him any problems... they last for ever! just have to change the oil...

i personally was thinkin about get a cheap 400ex for a trail quad because i dont wanna be runnin around on my race 250r...

just my 2 cents... best of luck and have fun...

my dad got a 400ex for trail riding and he hates it. To heavy, lacking power, and a weak frame to top it off. As soon as he was done riding it the first time he wanted to get rid of it.:o

yup another 400 guy lmao,

All joking aside the 2 strokes can be alot of fun and as most said they can be made into trail machines. Everyone always talks **** on the banshee I even turned one of them into a trail machine! its all a matter a preference.

If you like the 400 keep it there a good bike and you can do so much with them in mods and such.

If you like having something that isnt that common anymore the 250R is for you they are a sweet looking bike and not that common.

I would agree with number 3 on the list #1 lost me when they said FMF. #2 just dont seem to care very little description crappy pic.

Either way just make sure its right for YOU thats what matters cause your butts gonna be in the seat not ours lol.

I would say a 250R. I've ridden 400ex's and they are great quad, but once you get a 250R set up for trail riding they are so much fun. Mine has an ESR 310 (non-pv) and it will putt around all day long-like a 4 stroke, but when you crack the throttle, it's there. All I do is trail ride and it's a lot more fun than my old Banshee (great quad).

Just be patient when looking for a 250R. I waited 4 months until I ended up with the one below. If you want a decent trail machine, then look for an R that is setup for hare scrambles/GNCC that is not beat to death.

Good luck, there out there.
