Cody is just about to big for his KTM85XC. I had considered having the suspension done and adding some more power but wanted to see what everyone thought on something bigger.

He is still short, 5'5" i'd say but he is becoming big:p He is at 170-175 and lifting daily but i'm concerned with seat height etc for his height

Any suggestions?

I'd really consider gettin a 4-stroke 250f. it would be a waste to modify the 85 for a 170 pound man. I know 2 younger boys who race around here that are really short. They just moved up from 85s to 250s and they use stepping blocks on both sides. but with him weighing around 170, yall could adjust the suspesion and he could prolly touch with his toes. Only trouble he would have is gettin used to kick starting it b/c of the height of the bike. I know he's used to power so that shouldn't be an issue. But remember, correct me someone if i'm wrong but I believe the KTMs and Yamaha are the taller 250fs. So i'd pick Honda or Suzuki, I've never rode Kawi.

Save yourself future hassle and buy a 250F... I was in his posistion at one time, and I was so glad I moved up to a 125.. You`ll be able to raise the forks a little, pick up a lower seat, or cut the stock one, and he should be fine once he gets used to it.. Obviously, your mainly only looking at a hassle with the starts.. Once hes ridin, he`ll get comfortable quick..

250F of some brand. If it's a little tall now, he'll grow into it or there are suspension mods you can do. Seat foam and bar heights as well.

How good of a rider is he? If hes good put him on the 125. If not put him on the 250f 4strokes are eaier to ride, not my cup of tea but he will have more fun on a 250f if hes not so good. I'm 5'6" and ride a 125. no Excuses.

Pappy
06-02-2009, 04:12 PM
he is a good rider...not to say he is a racer etc...just a solid rider.

i got him the 85xc but he broke his leg and missed last season. now he has done some serious growing and can flat foot the 85 with no problem. the 85 power is awesome, it will run with just about anything but i either have to sink some coin in the engine and suspension to suit him, or upgrade.

i think the 250 size might be a tad big on him, but the crf150 and the 125 2 smokes, from what i understand, arent the best choices for the woods.

i will make a few calls before i do anything...if a good suspension and a top end kit are all thats needed for another year then i would go that route.....its just kind of a damned if ya do damned if ya dont situation

:p

you can look into getting him a ktm 105. Its kinda in-between a 85 and 125.

I can do the top end kit no problem....

I would have to se if a larger tire/rim can be used as well. If that combined with getting the suspension set for his weightw ould do it, he would be set.

In all honesty, this 85 has a crap load of power:p

i have a rm 85 and im 5' 6" but only like 120 and its a tad bit small.so id say go with the 125 2 stroke or 250f,they have things out now so you can lower the 250f's.my dad built a kawi 250f he wants to sell but im not sure what he wants for it.

hey pappy you still gotta realize one big factor. If you keep him on a 85 then he will stay in the 85 mod class against boys that barely way 100 pounds. Im sure Cody could fight his way to the front but all in all I'd say he wouldnt be happy on the 85 and racing the people he will be racing. Ya know? The 250f is the way to go. It will give him a chance to exceed his limits and also learn a new respect for the bigger bikes. I'm sure he will be like those boys who switch from 85 mods and get on 250fs and run top 5 in B-class. Thats amazing. I weight 185 and we used an cr85 that is lightly modded for a pit bike and I got my arse handed to me by a young boy running a stock 85. I'm So not telling ya what you should do but I believe the smartest move would be to bump him up to a 250f and let him adjust. I'd say it would take him around 2 weeks.

Pappy
06-02-2009, 07:12 PM
well, we had to pick up frames from teh strippers and he has a mint 450 that he allowed CJ to climb on. Id have to say that teh 250 will be the ticket

While I was waiting for frames to cure, I grabbed some snipits of the boys riding. they had already been riding for a few hours but did a few more laps for me:p

my 125 is great for the woods. and if the bike is lacking in snap off the bottom you can do some mild work such as high compression or a different exhaust to get the low end for the woods. the market is down on them because everyone is going four stroke so they are cheap to pick up. they are easy and cheap to maintain and they are lighter than the 4-strokes which is nice.

i paid a thousand for mine

Nice looking bike. I wish I was taller .... at 5'8" I can't even touch the ground with any of the bikes . First DB I ever tried was my buddy's YZ426 ... I couldn't touch the ground ... gave it too much throttle and scared the crap out of myself .... stuck with 4 wheels ever since.

Well, he has always had a bike.

Last year, we bought the KTM85Xc. He raced it at big buck after racing the quad on saturday. The following friday is when he broke his leg. Its been a year since he broke the leg and its finally healed as good as its gonna get so he immediatley hit the woods on his bike, only to realize he had grown about 5 inches and the extra beef he has put on from lifting all added up to him out growing the bike he was only able to race once:p

I felt pretty bad for him. It wasnt his fault but im not made of money but squeezed it in anyway. Its partial B-day present, part payment for all the work he does for me and even part of it is for another honor roll year in skool. I agreed to buy it but he has to pay for 1/2 of it through working etc.

Pappy you might be able to atleast get 2 more inches of sag in the rear shock without hindering to much performce. Plus your can lower the triple clamps on the front forks around an inch or so. You need to contact someone locally who knows the kawis really well. They do this kinda stuff for the shorter pros......

not a good idea. you will mess up the head angle and geometry on a bike that already has a tendency to push some. alot of the shorter pros have their seats cut down like 20mm. some even have their pegs raised a little.

Pappy
06-04-2009, 08:47 AM
I dont think we will be doing any lowering. He is still growing and the only issue he has at the moment is when stopped which is more him getting used to a heavier bike to balance.

300extreme#8
06-04-2009, 09:07 AM
man he looks goods on that thing. Tell him the best thing to get used to is hoping off to one side and letting his knee rest and bend over the seat while standing and balance it with one leg. Now when he gets ready to race, you might have to get two milk crates to put his feet on while waiting for the gates to drop. but other than that he will grow into it pretty quick.

Pappy
06-04-2009, 09:20 AM
He races in the woods....he is a treebasher 100%:p Its a dead engine start as well.

Im not worried about him racing right now, he has alot of training to do to get back in shape (cardio)

One of the biggest things we are looking forward to when he does start racing again is tha, on a bike, I will actually be able to help him. When he races his quad, I have to work the track and take pics and he has to do it all on his own.

It's crazy how much more you have to spend to have a competitive quad versus a bike, and not fair :grr:

300extreme#8
06-04-2009, 03:25 PM
i bet if you drag race the 250 against the 450 quad that yall have. the bike would win. Its unreal the power them things have. I bought my 250f thinking it would be unpowered. Heck that thing felt like my built 450r. If you ever get a chance then hop on a new 450f bike. WOW

it is crazy, the only thing you need on a bike is maintenance basically lol.

the 450 bikes are crazy, but i don't like them because you pretty much lug around.. the 250f is made to be wound out and its a lot funner rippin on a 250 IMO
