1987 250x 2stroke or 4stroke

How do you know if you have a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke engine ? I recently aquired a 300.00 250x fourtrax, and I am having a blast getting this quad back in working order. Does any body know what the lever, on top of the valve cover does? It looks like the lever blocks one of the valves maybe during higher RPM - sorry did'nt know how else to word.

its a 4stroke u can tell by the header if its really big its a 2 stroke and fourtrax also tells u its a 4stroke i think that lever on top relieves the pressure for the kicker

that lever is the decompression mechanism for kick starting,its controlled by a cable that runs off the kicker shaft to open the exhaust valve slightly for easier kicking,most people with a decent leg wont need it though:)

Thanks guys for the info. Now all I have to do is look for parts for this 250x and install them.

if your on a budget a good place too look for parts is ebay it always works for me
